Probably not really a horror, but it's creepy enough so I'd also recommend The Ninth Gate by Polanski. He's another director who's great at creating atmosphere. And as usual Johnny Depp is brill.
I thought about mentioning that, but as you say it's not really horror. Still, it's a very fine occult conspiracy film. So much better than the Da Vinci Crap.
Seriously try Switchblade Romance its very good if you dont mind subtitles. As for Polanski not a fan of his at all and try to avoid his films, hes just as bad as Gary Glitter.

ive always felt a little funny about polanski for that reason too.
I went to the pictures to see that. Almost fell asleep it was that boring and predictable.
I would've said it was the worst film I'd seen at the cinema but then I went to see the dreadful Wrong Turn aswell. That was the biggest pile of crap I'd seen in a long time.
Demons 1 and 2 were both good, but not that great. Having said that I do have the 3DVD box set of them :-)
House of 1000 Corpses and the Devil's Rejects are both great. H1K is more like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Rejects is more like the Hills Have Eyes remake (which is also good in it's own right).
Hostel was ok. It had some good ideas, but where exactly was the "300 gallons of blood" it took to make the flick? you're lucky if you see half that.
Cabin Fever was pretty good and sometimes gross, but not as good as all the publicity it got said it was. I know a few people who thought it was just tripe (and we've got similar tastes) but I thought it was not too bad.
See No Evil was pretty good if you like the Halloween type films. Group of delinquents get community service and have to do up a hotel, big freak lives there and bumps them off one by one. There's one death in it that's on the mind of every bloke out there :-D
--edit--
Technically not horror at all, but as you like Jap films then you could watch Battle Royale 1 and 2. The first film has a good bit of humour in it aswell. If you can, try to find Battle Royale II: The Return (instead of BRII: Requiem) as apparently it is a better film with all the character development put back in. I've never seen that version, but BRII: Requiem is a great film.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

I'll watch his films, but I wouldn't want him as a babysitter.
I'd guess you're not much of a fan of Woody Allen either then?
i can't believe no one has mentioned the blair witch project, thats the most scary film i have ever seen, i was very close to kaking myself in the cinema. i still have problems going into the woods.
Just my opinion:
What a load of garbage movie that was ... I think the pre-hype ruined it for me ... I was expecting something totally crazier and horrorifficusly drastically new ... but oh, no ... just a bunch of kids running about with a camera. Nothing too special in my opinion ... but, again, I think it was because of the pre-hype.
I haven't seen many of Roman Polanski's films but I did enjoy Death And The Maiden. Both Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley were really good in it. I would mind watching that again (it's been years since I've seen it).
Blair Witch i didnt really enjoy as i didnt believe any of the pre-movie gumpf, my mate did and was petrified by the movie until a few weeks later he realised it wasnt a tape they found in the wilderness etc ! He fell for it hook line and sinker !
First time i watched Evil Dead II that was very creepy though.
But i must admit i do like these Wrong Turn, Road Stop (thought that was a very good film) and all that sort of stuff. I do believe in the deep south theres some dodgy inbreds who are just like the types you see in film !
(By deep south i dont mean Portsmouth etc, i meant Alabama etc)

i expected so much more from that film. it just didnt deliver for me.
I love this scene in Jacob's Ladder. Warning! Probably a spoiler if you haven't watched the film yet. By the way, the siren sounds (from Silent Hill) aren't normally there.
EDIT: Updated with a better link which doesn't include the Silent Hill sounds.
Jacob's Ladder, Don't Look Now and Paperhouse are some of my favourites ... as I mentioned many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many (and many more) time before. :)
Check them out ... and report back here with a verdict. :)
Necros.
Can't find the latter two via any of the 'usual' channels... (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)
Well reading what's popped up on here since last night is certainly interesting.
I would say The Blair witch Project was OK, but I think it was way over-hyped which completely ruined it for me. Just when they were advertising it and it showed (supposed) hidden camera footage of American teenagers running screaming from the theatre as if their own lives were in danger, utterly ridiculous.
Creepers is terrible, so much so that all I really remember from it is a young Jennifer Connelly throwing up in a sink. Haven't seen the full version. Suspiria is the one with the girls boarding school? I can't remember (and I can't add anymore to what I say here because I know it would be a major spoiler). But I know I've seen it, and yes it always is the film mentioned when people talk about Dario Argentos' early work.
Jeepers Creepers is actually strangely enjoyable, I hated it the first time I watched it and couldn't understand why the Creeper was a big rubber looking Buffy Baddy, but they used CG for its wings. However a few years ago on my night off work, it was all that was on TV and strangely the second time I watched it I liked it.
Paperhouse is a pretty bizarre film, don't remember it really I just remember the girl actually finding the House she drew, and the boy in the window being a cripple (This shouldn't spoil anything for anybody who wants to watch this). I was sold on this film by the 80's style trailers that used to be on all the horror and sci-fi flicks back then.
Which leads me onto a film I would definitely recommend but completely forgot about "House", absolutely fantastic, jumps about a bit though, I found a dusty old copy of it on VHS at the local library here.
and for a random gorefest try Ghosts of Mars I actually thought that was pretty good (there's a scene where a girl gets her head chopped in half horizontally by a flying buzz saw).

I actually really enjoyed Ghosts of Mars. A very creepy movie. I don't understand why it got such bad reviews. The upbeat ending was a bit sucky, but other than that not bad at all.
Heh! Reading this has reminded me of so many good films!! House (and it's slightly less serious sequel), Demons, Critters, City Of Lost Children, etc.
If you want to just generally be creeped out, try the first Candyman..Been a while since I saw it, but I can remember being freaked out by it.
An American Werewolf In London scared the shit out of me when I first saw it, but I was about 7 years old. Watching it recently, it's still quite freaky...just not on the scale I remember. Although that dream sequence about his family is still nasty....
Another one that's nowhere near as scary in recent re-viewing is The Gate! Still, it's a good little horror flick that's very typical of the stuff you'd get from the videoshop to watch round your mate's house...
Can't find the latter two via any of the 'usual' channels... (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)
Any suggestions?
Andrew
As far as I know, Paperhouse is only available on Region 2 although I think an R1 version is on its way. Don't Look Now should be easier to find. I'm surprised Amazon don't have it (assuming it's one of the usual channels you're referring to).
Ah yes, Candyman is great. The second one isn't too bad either. Haven't seen the third one though.
One I can't believe I forgot to mention (and I don't think anyone else has mentioned) - Event Horizon! Fucking brilliant haunted house in space with a dimensional rift kinda thing. If you like Lovecraft then you'll probably enjoy this. A good bit of "hidden" gore in it aswell (if you've seen it you'll know what I mean).
In The Mouth Of Madness is another good one. Well, it has to be - Sam Neil's in it. More of a creepy twisty horror than a gory one.
@Necros
That Jacob's Ladder scene is so simple yet bloody effective. Certainly has a creepyness factor about it even before the deformed ones appear.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.
--Raziel (Legend of Kain: Soul Reaver 2)
Try and track down "Trilogy Of Terror" on region 1. Thats good for a laugh and was quite powerful in it's day.
The Wilderness is a good "creature" flick (although it's not really a creature flick!)
I really enjoyed 13 Ghosts (the re-make) Not really scary, but very enjoyable.
If you want something totally disturbing then look ot for "The Last House On Dead End Street". Until a few years ago this was thought to be a real snuff film. (But I found it to be rather long and a bit crap!)
Uzumaki (good, but weird)
Pulse (good, apart from the gratuitous totally unnecessary cat scene. grrr!)
White Noise 2 (not bad)
The Omen remake (meh - original was better)
The Ring 2 (meh - the original scared the crap out of me)
Today I'm going to watch Jacob's Ladder and White Noise...
Hopefully, In the Mouth of Madness will arrive by later today ;)

I can understand why it got bad reviews. Ice Cube's character is such a complete utter waste of space in it that I was practically routing for the zombies. It's also an obvious piece of B-movie schlock made with an A-movie budget which is not a recipe that ever goes down well with the critics.

white noise is rubbish.
watch the commentary tho, its funny cos michael keaton walks out halfway through.
Wouldn't say that. He's a great actor and just happens to be in two of the best Lovecraft type horror movies :-)
I've only got a few of his films (Event Horizon, Mouth of Madness, Jurassic Park 1 and 3) but the others that I've seen him in were good aswell, just maybe not my kinda thing.
Just like Johnny Depp - he's brill aswell but most of the films he's in (except Burton's stuff of course) aren't my thing either.

Wait, what? There's White Noise 2??? I thought the first one just came out like less than two years ago or so.
The first one was ok, nothing special, I just really hate all the pre-hype companies try to create.
For a quick laugh I recommend another movie which came out around the same time ... where all the people start disappearing and the main character tries to find out about his wife and/or daughter but apparently no one remembers them like he does. Blunder of an ending though.
I forgot a true classic, and I can't believe I did "Scanners" it's well messed up that film is. Scanners 2 is well questionable to say the least. Avoid anything spun off from these 2 films though especially Scanner Cop what a heap of turd.
