Question about Magnavox TV

edited May 2007 in Chit chat
Dunno if they sell Magnavox TVs where you guys live, but here it goes...

I have an old Magnavox 27" TV. Nowadays it usually costs more to repair a TV than to buy a new one. Still, I would like to know exactly what's going on with the TV.

Symptoms:

-Sometimes the TV turns on by itself. Happened twice in 3 months
-Sometimes the power off button doesn't work. Pressing it increases brighteness to the maximum, and pressing it again makes the brighteness level go back to normal. Sometimes pressing the power button does nothing, and the only way to power off the TV is by unplugging it. When the problem occurs, the TV doesn't respond to the remote either.
-The channel number display doesn't want to go away. And instead of being displayed on the top right corner, it's showing on the top left corner, stretched (twice the width) and horizontally inverted!

Since I'm not good with electronics, I'm thinking of selling it for $20 or less, but I don't want to sell it with letting the person know what's going on. :/

Sounds like the power button isn't really a power button, but a standby button (i.e. it'll shut down the tube and receiver, but the microcontroller circuit that runs everything else is still powered up).

Sounds to me like a fault with the microcontroller circuit. You may find it's on a panel all on its own and replaceable as a module (if you can find a new one).

And no, we don't have Magnavox here. Or RCA for that matter.
