i caught a virus

edited May 2007 in Chit chat
no this isn't another sad tale of my social life, its a bonafide IT question.

so anyway my computer detected a virus. (i have Shopos) it was some malware. i couldn't clean it, as i don't have admin rights to. and id rather not tell the IT dept where i caught it from or at least them find out. so i found out where the thing had been downloaded to (temp internet file) so i deleted the folder it was living it, and sophos told me it wasn't there anymore.

will this have killed it?

Until your computer crashes and the IT department finds out ... yes.

    Depends...

...and it is hard to give a more definite answer.

To be sure it is best to run a combination of anti virus/anti malware on it.

Without admin rights you may not be able to.

You could try Trend Housecall it's an online scanner. But it does need to install a kernal but there are two different technologies to try.

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

You might get away with one or the other of the kernals. Have patience with the downloads/initialisations.

PCTool's Spyware Doctor one of the best program for this kind of thing will sort it out.

It also blue screens your PC on a regular basis (which I verified by running under the Driver Verifier and the Kernel Debugger on a fresh install), I sent them a bug report and was told I "probably had a virus"

As to the virus, fess up and let your IT department know. The results of not doing so can be much, much worse....

You did it on purpose so you'd get one without a crank in the back didn't you? :-P
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.
