Bernard Manning RIP

edited June 2007 in Chit chat
sad to hear of one of the legends of comedy has died. One of the only people left to openly tell non-PC jokes.

Apparently it wasn't a heart attack but a fart attack ... as per this thread.

I love to post some Bernard Manning anecdotes, but I'm afraid this thread would then get locked or at worst I be banned!!

i never found him funny at all.

(but why post here then mile? - ed)

because a month or so before he died he filmed a show for ITV, where he gathered up all his mates for a wake for him. so he could enjoy it while alive. i think it was a do it yourself 'this is your life'

anyway, i wonder if they will show it????

Neither did I. But you have to admire him for giving the finger to the PC brigade and continued to tell his "racist" jokes.

I think it was called That Was Your Life. I hope they do still show it. It'd probably be a fitter tribute to him than anything the Beeb could do.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

I saw him at his Embassy club once and he was piss funny, rattling off jokes non-stop.

It was about the same time as the Fred West thing, and he had a fair few jokes about him.

Fatty Bernard was the best joke teller, without a doubt.

Chubby used to go on about his stupid feckin rubber chicken, so i suppose he was more rounded....

Neither are/were my cup of tea, but they ain't done anyone any real harm.

whether he is racist or not, whether hes funny or not, he tells racist jokes, quite nasty ones at that.............theres plenty of stupid people out there, they take things they hear as fact, they may hear his jokes and believe them, even if he doesnt, they may have racist beliefs and his jokes make them then think their beliefs are ok, some people kill people cos of their racist beliefs..............that aint funny

chuby ont he otherhand was mostly a fat lil perv :P

Did anyone else see the documentary where Bernard Manning went to India to do a comedy gig to *prove* he wasn't racist? I'm willing to believe that he really wasn't racist. However he didn't really make anyone laugh at that gig -- and the audience spoke pretty good English. Only time he made me laugh was on that Tiswas reunion show. Now that was funny.

    yeah people keep saying
its just an act....im sorry you cant do an act for nigh on 50 years? or whatever and not have a part of you / your actual beliefs coming through, and every racist ive ever come across has always started with "im not racist but....."

Amen! Absolute tosser, I watched that documentory on Channel 4 about him a few years ago (it was a season they had Freddie Starr and Michael Barrymore, and Maybe Stu Francis or Emo Phillips on there as well), and he spent the whole thing explaining himself. Then after all his explaining he tells a couple of "Paki" jokes and says send em' all back. An absolute fucking wanker if you ask me considering the majority of my pals in school and for some time after were as he said "Pakis", he kinda wound me up. As for now there are no asians really where I live but a lot of my new friends here are black, no doubt manning told "Nigger" jokes as well. Fat arsehole.

Someone should tell Chris Rock that.

I was the ethnic minority at my school and I still heard 'racist' jokes. Not from the white kids though.

So it's alright for Indians to tell jokes about themselves, but because I am white, I can't repeat them?

I'm half Irish too, so I can tell Irish jokes, but should be offended if anyone repeats them back to me?

still dont make it right tho, 2 wrongs dont make a right
no race should indulge in racism

in times gone by yes ok, different races didnt see each other/didnt understand each other, its a different world now...we should be wiping out all these misconceptions and bigotrys and working to understanding each other
people like manning just shove another obstacle in the way and thats another reason why such hostilities are around today
fear and misunderstanding causes distrust on both sides which then harbours grudges and things build and build, each side starts keeping itself to itself and so the vicious circle goes

It is perfectly possible to tell racist jokes without being a racist. It's just not socially acceptable anymore (nor should it be).

deep down tbh tho i think people who DO tell them are...........whether they know it or not, maybe its a subliminal racism

I'm trying to remember the comedy show which ended with this gem:

"Bernard Manning, the comedian who was told by doctors to lose five stones or die, has today -- tragically -- lost five stones."

In his show tonight, Sir trevor McDonald will call Bernhard manning "A fat white bastard"

Can someone explain to me on what level this is not racist?:-?

Can't be done as it IS blatant racism.

It's an obvious poke at Manning's tendency to racist humour rather than Sir Trevor being nasty about whites. So whilst the humour is racist, it's an "answer back" joke as well as clearly tongue-in-cheek.
