Phillips have several models, I got a couple and they play avi (divx) files great. Mine are the DVP642 and the dvp5982 (HDMI) Last one has HD upscaling and plays Divx Ultra also.

Note model numbers may be different in the UK, prices here are about $40 for the dvp642 and I just got the DVP5982 for $64

I swear by Cyberhome. No longer in stock at Amazon, you could try froogle or fleabay.

I've got the 400, and Dad the 402. Been using DVD players since 1998, and these little players are the dog's danglies. Easily made multi-region and will play avi's, jpg's, and mp3's too. The remote is crap, but it's a billy bargain.

    Sometimes available for £18!!

We just got a Toshiba one from either Comet or Curries for £35 on Saturday in Wakey. You can get the same model online for a few quid less but the postage would probably bump it up again.

We thought it was a cool bargain to get a good brand one for that price.

I amen to the Philips models, due to their good ability to play DVD-R / RW. I once scrapped a cheap DVD-player coz it didn't like my "homemade" discs.

Philips DVD-players are also usually easy to make zone-free.

Do the avi(divx) play only from cd-r or can you use dvd-r, say for example load a dvd-r with 12 eps ?

    Cheers

Yes, DVD-R, DVD+R (least for the phillips ones). Six 700mb divx movies per disk!

I had a UMAX/Yamada one from Amazon for ?39 - it was spectacular ! Could play everything.. XVid DIXV etc., and the firmware was upgradable too.

The downside is that it packed up 1 month after the guarantee ran out :*(

Yep, a season usually fits quite nicely on two DVD-R... so I've heard.

I have a Philips DVP 5960, which is multi-region (just have to enter a code) and can play pretty much whatever you can throw at it. And it's got a USB port as well, so you can just shove stuff onto a USB memory key and watch it on the big TV! That's bloody handy, I can tell you. Working my way through Sledge Hammer season 1 at the moment...
