Silly little question written at the stroke of midnight.

The run-of-the-mill Sinclair Spectrum is controlled by a 16K ROM program which can be divided into three major parts:
1. I/O routines
2. BASIC interpreter
3. Expression handling.*

Does anyone know the min/max size of Windows?** (the different versions, or specific ones) ... and another question arises ... Windows would just be a fart in the wind without a BIOS ... so which is the "actual" OS (so to speak) on a PC? One is just a shell on top of another, right?

Another "Hmmm" ... Could we say that the Speccy ROM is not only an OS (so to speak) but also technically the BIOS ... waitywait! ... I think I be gettin' a headyache!

Zzzidenote: I think it's a bit funnee and somewhat so very much Wikipediaish to see the definition of BIOS on Wikipedia ... and then they have the incorrect definition right above the picture on the right Zzzhar Zzzhar Zzzhar Zzzzzzzzz. Actually ... come to think of it I think I've only heard it as "Basic Input/Output System" and not "Services" ... ah, whatever.

Time for hitting of the hay.

*Everything above the asterisk is paraphrased from T.C.S.R.D.
**I'm not talking about the size of the whole freaking package with WMP, Draw etc garbage ... just the core controlling the rest as per the three mentioned above ... well ... the second one wouldn't necessarily be called a BASIC interpreter when it comes to PCs ;-)

Don't forget the ULA which performs a similar function to a PC's BIOS.

What a crap post for #1000.

At least it's not nonsense. Actually, it probably is completely wrong in every detail.

And remember, Windows is just DOS with pretty pictures.

The stinkin' ULA, how could I forget to bring that one into the equation! Thanks.

As for Windows, the 3.1/95/98... series were mostly just pretty pictures grafted on top of DOS, but the NT/XP/Vista series are proper OSes in their own right.

    don't forget windows 1.x and 2.x :)

they didn't even have the pretty pictures :-)

The BIOS is used as nothing but a boot loader these days - and you can get Windows to boot on a system without a BIOS (such as an Intel based Mac, which has EFI rather than BIOS). As soon as the OS switches into protected mode, it no longer cares about the BIOS.

The ULA isn't a BIOS equivalent by the way - the ULA is analagous to your video card and sound card (admittedly, a rather simple one!)
