I have received my RGB SCART / P?ritel cable for my +2A, and now I have attempted to connect it, resulting in a crap signal on my TV! Can someone help me?

    Help!
    Help! I Need Somebody,
    Help! Not Just Anybody,
Help! You Know I Need Someone, Help.

When I Was Younger, So Much Younger Than Today,
I Never Needed Anybody's Help In Any Way.
But Now These Days Are Gone, I'm Not So Self Assured,
Now I Find I've Changed My Mind I've Opened Up The Doors.

Help Me If You Can, I'm Feeling Down
And I Do Appreciate You Being Around.
Help Me Get My Feet Back On The Ground,
Won't You Please, Please Help Me.

And Now My Life Has Changed In Oh So Many Ways,
My Independence Seems To Vanish In The Haze.
But Ev'ry Now And Then I Feel So Insecure,
I Know That I Just Need You Like I've Never Done Before.

Help Me If You Can, I'm Feeling Down
And I Do Appreciate You Being Around.
Help Me Get My Feet Back On The Ground,
Won't You Please, Please Help Me.

Help Me If You Can, I'm Feeling Down
And I Do Appreciate You Being Round.
Help Me, Get My Feet Back On The Ground,
    Won't You Please,
    Please Help Me,
    Help Me,
    Help Me, Oh.
    Oh bugger!<br>

Silly question perhaps, but are you sure the cable is for a +2a? LaesQ made a cable for my +2, and on a +2a/+3 it will look crappy.

Also, have you ensured your TV is set to use the RGB channel? My TV at home has several "external" channels... AV-1, AV-2, RGB, and I think a couple others. To get RGB working I need to plug the SCART cable into a specific SCART socket (there are two on the back of the telly).

Here are some pointers which may aid you in aiding me.

Alpha - There is only ONE ( 1 ) SCART socket on the back of my TV.
Bravo - There is only "External 1" and "AV 1" on my TV (Former = SCART).
Charlie - The cable has "+3" written on the SCART end in marker pen.

The only thing I can think of that doesn't involve it being a duff cable (which is possible) would be if this SCART socket doesn't do RGB. However, that's unlikely (?) and I would expect that you wouldn't get a picture at all... I could be wrong on that tho'.

I should maybe add that I don't know much about the hardware side, I just know the issues I've seen using my various Speccies with my TV :)

You know, that's EXACTLY what popped into my head as soon as I saw the topic in the thread listing :-)

Possibly something to do with the John Lennon interview with Rolling Stone magazine on the radio this morning.

It happens to me quite often - I read a post and a song pops into my head. when it's a classic, like Floyd or Marillion, I just can't help posing the lyrics sometimes. But then, DEATH is a BAST - (c) 2007, Fogartylee :)

Take a look at the scart's pins (sort of). Maybe one of them has been pushed inside and does not make electrical contact with the tv's scart socket.
    This has happened to me.

Have you another Spectrum to try?
It is possible that the RGB port on your Spectrum may not be working correct a faulty component perhaps.

No. I got two +2s, and they're both dead as a dodo.

I'll try connecting the SCART end of the connector to my DVD recorder, to amplify the signal :)

I doubt the problem is due to weak signal... try squezing/bending the cable in several places and in all lenght and specialy on the jacks connections, maybe its broken somewhere internaly. See if that fixes the problem even instantenously.

I would put this down to a bad ground connection.
Believe it or not, I made my own Plus2A/Plus3 scart some years ago.
It was not a happy picture I can tell you, why? because the ground wire I used was not soldered enough, I re-made the solder connection and perfect picture.
I am not saying that is your problem but it is a possibility.

Can you get a Multimeter to try the pin outs and see if they are correct or not?
It is possible you may have a pin that is not making full connection, or any connection.

Come to think of it, is the scart plug (Spectrum end) a sealed unit?
If not then can you prise it open to see if a wire has come away?
And why not take the scart plug (TV end) apart to see if the same has happened.

The DVD recorder don't process RGB signals, only composite video.

And do you have (ZX) colors on the screen ? Also, are you connecting directly the SCART cable to the TV ? Don't connect it via those "multi-sockets" SCART inputs adapters.

I am connecting the SCART directly to the TV. What do you mean by ZX Colours?

Do you have color display? with all 8 colors ?
  • edited July 2007
Don't you mean 16 colours? ;). Let's not forget bright mode as well.

It could be that you have the wrong cable for your computer. The +2 cable is different from the +2a cable.

It could also be that your Scart cable is wired up for composite PAL instead of RGB.

If it was wired for composite PAL then it would not work as the Plus2A/Plus3 do not have composite PAL just RGB.

All previous Spectrum 128`s had composite PAL (video)as well as RGB not the newer PLus2A/+3`s

Not all 128K Spectrum! French grey +2 don't have composite PAL, only RGB output.
