Spectrum Emus for the DS

edited November 2007 in Emulators
So what's the emu of choice then,

I've got a DS on the way and one of those blank cart things, and the first thing I want to do is play Spectrum games

Think you`ll be disapointed with the results with either emulator thats up and running..

I use my GP2x for emulation...

For me it's ZXDS, as it's the only one that will play on my slot-2 EZ-Flash IV card.

@stainy: I'm not disappointed with the performance of ZXDS, it's great. The sound and graphic emulation are fine IMO. It's lacking a few features, such as key mapping files for each game, which Patrik is working on.

ZXDS, too. Not too many emulators to choose from, but that's the better.
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!

I hear that Emu's taking viagra now, which would explain why his rod's permanently stiff.

Same here... Except for Speccy emulation. On the DS, it simply is far better than any GP2X spectrum emulator.

    D.

I've just tested the latest version of ZXDS and it's brilliant. Played Robocop a little, it even plays the digitized voices!

I'm also testing the PZX format, converting some TZX to PZX with the pzxtools. It's nice to see turboloaders working on the DS 8)

Shouldn't laugh, but when I think of how Rod Hull died, I always imagine him on top of a ladder, fighting with Emu over the TV ariel...

Yer, ZXDS is a great emulator on the DS. I got my son hooked on Manic Miner and a few others. He also likes Blinkey's Scarey School.

ZXDS is ace now it lets you load games from other directories, not just the root.

ZXDS is my DS Speccy emu of choice and has worked for most things thrown at it (although no redefinable keys and joystick choice means no Horace Goes Skiing so BOOOOO to you Patrik ;) as Horace games use QZIP instead of QAOP)
Anyway, I know Patrik doesn't want bug reports without technical pointers, but I can't do that. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea why Kempston joystick doesn't work in Jack the Nipper 2? It works on everything else I've tried, but for some reason JTN2 doesn't work, even though the same tap file works fine for Kempston on any PC emulator I've tried.
Yes, I have pressed Select, but still get nothing.
    Cheers!

Different Kempston port decoding? Some clone interfaces were "looser" than the official machine with respect to which ports they'd respond to.

If JTN2 assumed a "loose" decoding, but ZXDS uses a "strict" decoding, things could not work.

Best guess off the top of my head :-)

Ad kempston, I'll have a look. Ad redefinable keys, that's something I am working on right now, together with a proper UI in general.

It just seems odd that everything else that uses Kempston works fine, and this game also works fine under Kempston emulation on a PC, but in ZXDS it fails to work. Very bizarre.
Patrik, redefinable keys inside a better GUI would be fantastic for higher compatibility purposes, (as would a better save state menu with the name matching the name of the game you're saving) but to be honest right now I am not complaining, it's a brilliant emulator which allows me to play lots of things on my commute that I usually wouldn't get a chance to and the save state option is a godsend so thank you thank you THANK YOU :)

Any chance you'll be implementing normal-speed tax/tap loading so that stuff like Joe Blade 2's Pacman is playable? :) Fuss, moan, complain ;)
  • edited October 2007
Of course. Besides, it is the best way how to dodge complaints when the fast loading screws up for whatever reason.

Yep, looks like JTN2 needs A5 addressing, whereas ZXDS uses the full A5-A7 addressing. I wonder what the original Kempston Joystick used, however most clones seem to use A5 solely, so I will likely adopt that as well.
