I have decided to get one of the new macs but am undecided as to which to get, i know some people on here use macs but what are the disadvantages of using a mac to browse the web, are any pages not viewable on a mac ? i have been looking at the new mac mini and was wondering what sort of graphics chip does it have ? is it the same as the full macs and if not does it make any difference to the speed of the software in particular the dvd making software ? i have a lot of avi files i would like to play on the mac is the mac able to read an ntfs formtted hard drive i have read that it can and it can't, any advice would be welcome from anyone who has made the transition from windows to mac,

I use the same browser (Firefox) on all platforms. Works just as well on a Mac as on Linux or Windows. My Dad uses Safari on his machine, he hasn't run into any problems with page rendering (or I'd have heard about it).

I used Firefox a while ago and i wasn't too enamoured by it to be honest i suppose u have to give it time to get used to it, DEATH is the best, but was so much easier to start using IE again. Is Safari Firefox with another name ? or a totally different web browser ? The mac will be mainly for using garageband, watching dvd's and web browsing.

The graphics chip in the Mac mini is an Intel GMA950 which is about as cheap and nasty as they come, I'm afraid. That said, I'm sure it's OK for video playback and DVD making; the big difference between integrated graphics and dedicated cards these days is the 3D rendering capabilities.

You shouldn't have problems reading NTFS disks on a Mac. Writing to them, however, can be a bit on the risky side as that's not fully supported. For sharing disks between Macs and Windows PCs, the normal method is to format them as FAT32, cross your fingers, and don't store anything solely on them long term.

That depends on your budget, and what you plan on doing with it. I bought myself a 17" MacBook Pro back in July. My needs were something fast which I could carry through customs.

There are going to be some poorly designed sites that requite IE on Windows. It is such a rare occurrence that I can't think of any though. Oh wait, yes I can, our work web-based task organization system, custom built by Russian hackers in Siberia, doesn't work properly.

The mini is a nice machine. I have an original G4 mini plugged into my TV. The downside is the video acceleration. As mentioned the current ones only have Intel's most basic onboard offerings. On the plus side they do come with Core2Duo chips now. They ought to be fast enough for video encoding, and playback shouldn't be an issue. However, if you were thinking of booting into Windows for some 3D gaming it will suck. Get an iMac, MBP or Tower instead, although the last two don't come cheap.

The Mac has no trouble in reading NTFS. It will recognise and mount NTFS volumes automatically. If you want to write than that is a bit more work. FUSE (the userland filesystem and not Phil's Speccy emulator) can be configured to write to NTFS - but use it at your own risk! It is possible to transfer data in the other direction though. I bought a copy of MacDrive, which lets Windows write to HFS+ format drives. Works great.

I'm glad you've decided to get a Mac. I've been a Mac user for about 8 years now, and I've had no real problems with any of them. I myself have just bought a brand new 20" iMac after my laptop now shuts down after 10 mins, and it really is the bees knees :) The iMac I've got is supposed to be pretty good at running games as it has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and an ATI Radeon X600 graphics card.

And Garageband is the best app I've ever used! :)

Pottyboy can u tell me if the remote control can turn the mac on and off ?

if it can't, on my PC in the power options i set the pc to shut down when i press the sleep button on my wireless keyboard, is there a similar option on a Mac ?
  • edited September 2007
Nope. The remote control only operates Front Row, and there's no power/sleep key on the mac's keyboard.

Power/sleep can be done through the apple menu (top left of the screen). There's probably a keyboard shortcut. Once in sleep mode, to wake it up, press any key.

I don't know what the sleep shortcut key is though, I have a PowerBook G4 and I just close the lid!

Thanks for the help and info i have the money in the bank ready to get the Mini Mac, one last thing i would like to know is about Garageband, i will be wanting to record my guitars ( electric and acoustic ) and vocals, can i plug a mocrophone into the mac, the reason i ask is when i have tried with my pc the volume is very low and has a lot of hissing for some reason, or would i have to buy a usb preamplifier or whatever they would be called.

i don't think there is a mic socket on the mac mini, certainly not on my g4 model anyway, it would have to be a USB wotsit to sort that out.
  • edited September 2007
If your mac doesn't have a microphone socket, then get yourself a Griffin iMic. Great little device :)
