Tried it years ago whilst in college me and my best mate downloaded it, thinking we were gonna make really good fighting games. Then it turns out you need to be good at programming (Some form of C/C++). Anyway we fiddled with it and it does seem pretty good, but it looks like it would take a lot of effort and a long time.

DL some of the MUGEN games some of them are pretty good (and pretty large in size some hefty MEG'age and some of them have like 40-60 characters to choose from) and play just like the arcades they're based on, however like all game packages free or commercial you're gonna get some crap.

Some of the shall we say "Lesser" efforts are worth getting hold of just to see how truly bad some peoples games are. The crap games are on par with the stuff I'd end up with no doubt :D

Mugen is a real pig to run. I've only ever been able to get a few characters working and no new backgrounds or anything! Mugen has also been abandond by it's developers and getting hold of things is almost immpossible now (I'm totally crap at search engines!). The best site I've found is http://www.mugenation.com/index.php but even this has a load of dead links.

If anyone can find a full game with "weird" characters (not the usual street fighter/king of fuighters etc...I have MAME for those) like Homer, Peter Griffin, Marvin The Martian etc please feel free to post a link (I'd rather not torrent though!)

I've just found this guy through Youtube. He has loads of rare Mugen characters and so on. http://mugen.nycmuonline.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=8908038d7bba28b729cb76d8963b2d36

Good luck with getting it to work though!

After finding several new videos of MUGEN working on YouTube, I decided to give it "one last try" and failed miserably. My brother on the other hand, had much more luck that I had and managed to get it to work.

The hardest ting about MUGEN is actually finding working characters and backgrounds online. Google is rubbish for this. The MUGEN comunity is no use either, as they are a very stuck up bunch and you will find planty of "look what I've got, but you can't have it" kind of thing.

Dig around abit and you can find some funny shit. I have Popeye, Captain Caveman, Ronald McDonald etc and they all work great!

These guys are anoying, but at least they are easy to follow (the links don't work anymore though)

This site is a great scource of characters etc, but, the server goes down quite alot, so keep trying. This is one of those sites that link out to other sites and can be a bit "hit and miss", but you should be able to find tons of stuff through here

    http://www.heroesofgaming.com/mugen/p13_sectionid/2/p13_currentpage/12/p13_pagesize/5/p13_searchby/title

This site has alot of stuff, but has no pictures to shoe what you are downloading. Good place to start though.

    http://cmugen.com/

You need to register with this site and I've not used it, but my brother said that it works great.

Also, be sure to grab a screen pcak before you start adding characters. I'm using the EvE pack as it has TONS of slots.

It's nice to see a working Homer as me and my best mate tried to get a Homer Simpson character together in MUGEN about 12 years ago, it didn't work out too well. Basically I used a few snippets from the simpsons arcade and tried to patch moves together using frames drawn with what seemed like millions of cut and pastes and MS Paint. The bitmaps were all different sizes the sprite turned bright purple when we tried to run it, it was an epic failure basically.

Still me and me old mucker had fun trying, as it's almost guarenteed that stupid amounts of alchohol were consumed during the making of said failed Homer Simpson (maybe that's why we couldn't get him working). As an unlockable character for completeing the game we were going to make a gay Homer called Homma Simpson (the pretence behind this character was he was going to be another long lost brother like Unc'y Herb), of course this was before we realised how much work would be involved and after the fail of Homer, Homma was never an option, never mind making him an unlockable.

Delusions of granduer I'm sure
