Batty - poor progression of difficulty?

edited September 2007 in Games
So, Batty. The first couple of levels are a joy to play, the gameplay is better than Arkanoid by a factor of loads.

Then you get to level 3, which, as far as I can tell, is rock hard. I'm not sure I ever got past this one without the 'rocket' booster that skips you on to the next level.

I forget the details, but I think level 4 is fairly straightforward, and 5 is a nightmare again.

So does Batty fail to give a good progression of difficulty as the levels go on? Should level 3 come later in the game? Or am I just rubbish at it?

Hell yes. They've got a brilliant engine in there, including the unique simultanous dual-player option, and they spoil it with such a difficult level early on.

Perhaps someone fancies writing a level editor for it?

Yea it's hard to get past level 4. I think i've seen level 5 once. How many levels does it have?
    The trouble with tribbles is.......

    agreed.

Batty looks nice and plays nice, but is way too hard IMO. I cant even get very far with the emu on 61% speed. (which is the slowest my spin emu will play games. any les than 61 and the keys don't respond for some reason).

I prefer krakout, when it comes to bat'n'ball sims.

I don't remember having much trouble with the first couple of levels. Admittedly, it's been a long time since I last played it properly and I took advantage of the rocket booster feature for the first couple of levels ... and then I lost all my lives. :)

    Necros.

    i love this game
its one of my favorite breakout games on the speccy
however it is very difficult and i don't think i could have played it back in the day.
now with emulators i can get the speed down and save my progress so its much easier and i can enjoy this great game.

It does indeed get a bit tricky after level 2, but it's still quite fun getting that far. I assume it's easier with two players at once, although it's been so long since I played it with anyone else I forget if that's the case. I suppose these days we expect games like this to be a walk in the park for the first 20 minutes then get devilishly tricky. Not with Batty though! I think there's about 8 levels in total, possibly 9, then it repeats if I remember correctly.

That's what the rocket booster is for though. I like the anticipation, waiting for that booster to appear on a level that you're hard pressed to complete. Even so, an editor is a good idea ;)
