Programming online for BIG BUCKS

edited October 2007 in Chit chat
A while ago I was reading about people who make money by carrying out software programming projects for people online. Apparently there's a few websites where, say if you know C++ or how to build websites, you can go on these websites and pick up jobs, which you then program and then get paid for.

Does anybody know any of these websites?

Cheers!

You can make better money by staying away from web programming - it's a very overpopulated field unless you're really really really good at it.

Plenty of money in writing specialist back-end software/systems and niche apps - basically anything which won't have open-source equivalents in the next few years.

And if you can crack the financial sector then you have a licence to print money - six-figure salaries for good coders and engineers are commonplace.

Ok, well say you teach yourself until you're shit-hot at C++. How do you get in to financial coding??? :)

    shag your way in there.

You don't get shit-hot solely by teaching yourself - experience is everything. Anyone can write a program from scratch, but many stumble when trying to maintain and expand a system written by a crap programmer.

As for cracking the financial sector, start at the bottom as a junior programmer (standard job-hunting strategy to find a job - sign up with agencies, look at job ads, etc) and work your way up. It's a long hard slog, but very rewarding if you're good at it.

The sites you are thinking of are basically forums. Someone posts a project and you reply with a bid - usually around ?3k.

Then some Indian spammers/crap coders put in a bid for ?300 and knacker the 'average'.

Most bids are closed, but the average is displayed to give you an idea. Most Indian bids are along the lines of 'we can do what you want for ?300'. They are usually automated replies so the bidders have no idea what projects they have bid on. Anyone trying to take the sites seriously gets shafted.

The best way I found for coding was to get to know some designers that send me sites and ask for them to be coded. I am more often being asked to do dreamweaver/frontpage sites properly too.

Basically it comes down to experience and contacts. Most designers I know have a regular customer base too as the clients gain confidence. 90% of my work comes from regular designers or word of mouth.

From that site and to support what I just said:-

Average bid $400. I wouldn't turn my PC on for that.

I have had good success posting for projects on this website and I am hoping that same success is found with this project. I am looking for a good, qualified video editor who can edit a series of seven two-minute ( each is approxamitely two-minutes) clips. I will give you a basic timeline and we can use my server to transfer the video. I will need you to do a basic, functional but visually appealing text intro and outro as well as cover the existing url watermark with our new one.
So basically you have ripped off some videos of the web and want to re-brand them. :x

    And...

Wants to rip off an entire website and 'onready' can do it in one day and person will only pay on completion!!
