1 kilopost, like 1 kilobyte

edited October 2007 in Chit chat
OK, so this is my kilopost, a grand total of 0x400 posts, or 2^10 posts (so I can no longer count all the posts I've made to WOS forums on my fingers, I have to carry to my right little toe). That's 1024 if you still use the rather inconvenient base 10. No, I won't call it one kibipost :-)

Just thought you might like to know that. Roll on 2^11 posts.

A Kilo and a Kilobyte are two different things, I'm sure some one will have the time to explain why, but not me I'm afraid.

    rofl

a kilogram is 1000 grams yes.
    a denary kilo is 1000
but in binary a kilosomething is 1024. because it's powers of 2, not powers of 10

Except these days people with too much time on their hands and insufficient mental capacity feel that calling it a Kilobyte is too confusing. So the officially sanctioned term (as mentioned above) is kibibyte, and mibibyte instead of megabyte, etc. So be careful who you go boasting to about your new-found trivia!

Now, IMHO, which I appreciate is worth nothing, there was no confusion in the first place. People said their machine had 64KB of address space and we all ('cept mile, apparently ;-) ) knew it meant 65536 bytes. It's not like you can buy a 64000 byte RAM chip anyway.

NOW when someone says "100 megabytes" we have to ask "do you mean proper megabytes, like 2^20 that people now want to call mibibytes, or stupid-in-a-computing-context Mega-bytes as in 10^6?" Duh.

is a giggabyte the biggest you can have or is there a bigger one, and if so what would it be would it be a kilogiggabyte?

A terabyte (Tb) is a 1000 Gigabytes and a petabyte is a thousand Terabytes. You can get terabyte harddrives now.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petabyte) it then goes onto:

    Exabyte
    Zettabyte
    Yottabyte

I really do like your sense of humour Mile.

Actually the computer that has been running the internet has not changed since 1969 and it's still going strong even though it only has only 50 bytes of memory, which in 1969 was more than adiquate. You dont need allot of power of storeage capacity to process simple HTTP:// requests. At its time it was billed as the computer of the future, they claimed that by the year 2000 every one would have one.Snigger chortle chortle, all complete bullsh!t of course!!

    It is pictured below:

I like how it says this is how a home computer could look in 2004, I don't have a room big enough to house it.

Is it a laptop or a desktop?

That's the ultra-compact version. The full one takes several floors of a large skyscraper to house it. :D
