The History Of The WoS Part One

edited January 2008 in Chit chat
Does anyone remember when the WoS forums originally opened? The earliest post I could find was dated 18th December 2000 and it can be found here if you're interested. Is that actually the first or were there any earlier than it? An official "Welcome to the forums" message, for instance.

I'm pretty sure our leader and guiding light, the grand founder of WoS, Martijn will know :-)

How tempting it would be to bump that post!!

It's interesting that the second poster has a join date in 2002, but the post itself is dated 2001! Actually both of them do. It must be that the "join date" feature was added then.

Just for the heck of it!!

Sorry I could not resist that. Should I get my coat??

Could it be that this was when the Emulator's section was opened.

All the other first posts in each forum were dated 2001 or later. That was the only one from 2000. Perhaps the emulators section was the first to open and the others came later.

I remember bumping the earliest thread I could find, it was quite a while ago. I just tried finding it but couldn't.
I did however come across this thread which pretty much shows the beauty and uniqueness of the WOS forums.

I can try looking at database level, but this could well be the first post. As the news archive for 2000 says, 18 December was the date I added forums (the package named "phorum").

Yes, in 2002 I switched to phpBB, which added this field among others. It also reordered all message IDs for no apparant reason; you'd expect post number '1' being the first post ever. But it isn't.

At the opening, I believe we had 3 forums: Games, Emulators and Miscellaneous.

We hear that a lot, and wonder where it came from. :o

There were a number of database crashes over the years, which is why back-ups are made. A small number (countable on 1 or 2 hands) of posts were lost in the first month of upgrading to vBulletin. Those were posts made in between the latest back-up and a non-recoverable crash.

And indeed it is (his second and last post was also the second post ever). Well found, sherlock!

It's a Damned song. I think I have it on CD. I actually took the title of the thread from the Mel Brooks' film.

I think that's because everyone who registered before and on 28th February 2002 has that date listed on their profile instead of their actual registration date. It looks like it was a problem when the phpBB was set up and the previous data was transferred.

This could certainly be the reason, but that happened well over 5 and a half years ago, at which time the rumour never showed - it's really something of the last year or so (IIRC).

Note: I'm honestly curious where this rumour came from, since, as I said, I hear it a lot these days. Along with the rumour of me dying soon. ;-)

Well for me I thought so because I (thought I) re-registered with this account and figuring my original one had been wiped due to inactivity...I am surprised you only had the forums going in 2000 though. Could have swore I was registered here when I first came to the US in 97.....guess my mind is going or that was some other forum.

Were you injured in the forum crash? Maybe thats where the rumour of your demise came from?

A few posts I made between (roughly) February and May 2001 were lost, I'm sure of that, as there is a big gap between February and May where I don't post anything, and I know for a fact I did.

There seem to have been problems with forum crashes in December 2000:

I wasn't here when the original phorum software was in use. What was it like, visually and feature-wise?

Tuesday morning bingo was cancelled due to an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the common room and the pharmaceutical company are currently on strike so the residents are without their medication, which is making them very restless and prone to violent and extremely bizarre outbursts. :p

It was still very early days as far as forums went; phorum wasn't half bad (after you fixed the bugs causing the above effect). Management-wise, it was actually rather good - much better than phpBB at any rate.

What I liked most was the non-standard look. Everything looked like phpBB back then, and this one seemed to blend more into the site. I must say I liked it a lot.

There were some seriously lacking features, though. For example, if you posted to a thread, the thread didn't climb up, but stay where it was listed. So, if you responded to a thread from a week ago, nobody would notice...
It also had no 'memory'; you had to remember yourself which post in a thread you had last read. Sadly, phorum development was discontinued soon after I started using it.

Indeed! I remember there was even a debate on whether we should change to a new look forum and the first round was in favour of a decisive "NO!". But I guess a change was inevitable (due to forum crash? not sure) and happily things have turned out quite well in the end I suppose. This forum is a lot easier to navigate all right but sometimes I miss the spontaneity and chaos of the older forum.

Plus I associate the older forum with some rather odd and colourful characters who sadly have drifted away since - guys like Ed, Sharopolis, the 2 Alessandro's, Amigo, Cyborg et al.

On the other hand we have some odd and wonderful characters on this forum as well so I guess it evens out in the end. All in all, WoSF is still the place to be no matter which way you look at it! Carry on specchums!

Alessandro Grussu popped by last May to say hello. Tommasi hasn't been here since '95 and I think Ed and Sharopolis have visited recently. As far as I know, Cyborg is still around.

Haven't seen much of Derek Glen in recent years though. Now he was a nutter. :D

And what happened to (Milly's) Pigdog? :)

Tommasi was around until much longer than that if I'm not sadly mistaken! :-)

Ed and Shar have popped by, yes, but never really stayed on for longer than a post or so. I think I scared Ed away with my constant queries on the unfinished English version of La Abadia Del Crimen! Haven't seen Cyborg post in here for some time now. Last I heard he was busy with university exams and that was over a year ago.
