Gamer Points In Spectrum Games

edited October 2007 in Emulators
Just thinking out a loud on this one but...............

Wouldn?t it be great if one of the established emulators supported some kind of Gamer Points system similar to the system used on the XBOX 360.

I don?t know if it would be technically possible for an emulator to establish if certain gaming conditions had been met within the code of a game i.e. a certain amount of objects had been collected or points scored etc.

The emulator could then connect to the internet and post these achievements for a given username to a website (here perhaps) where other users could also compare their achievements with other registered users creating a sense of competition.

This would certainly create a massive uplift in people replaying the classic games again, if only to prove oneself as the best speccy gamer.

Obviously doing the entire database would be out of the question but perhaps the top 100 rated games would be a nice project if technically possible.

What do you think?

The Spectrum emulator application on Facebook does this in a limited way. Your high scores for certain games (Manic Miner, Hungry Horace, Chuckie Egg, etc) are posted so that you can compete against other people. To do this, the application has to retrieve the high score from the correct location in the emulated Spectrum memory for each game. So there's only a handful of games supported at the moment, since each one has to be catered for individually. Hopefully there'll be more games supported in future.

Thanks for the info, I'm sure this could be expanded further with an achievement system more akin the one on Xbox 360. Multiple achievements earned in stages for every game etc and easy online comparison of achievements with fellow users would be great.

I just think the idea would work so much better in a purpose built location like worldofspectrum.org using an established emulator than it would on somewhere like facebook.

What is the Spectrum emulator on Facebook called? I cannot find it and I have searched for "ZX", "Spectrum" and "Sinclair".

That's a friggin' good idea - assuming it could be protected against abuse (maybe linking it in somehow with the rzx stuff).

I don't see it as being significantly more of a technical challenge than some of the 256 colour overlay stuff.

It's still "under construction", which is probably why you can't find it by browsing applications. Here's a direct link to it:

Also check out the ZX Spectrum group (which also has a link to the emulator). You should be able to contact the author from there if you need to:

You should be aware that RZX "security" is frankly, a load of snake oil.

Goodness me, how sad would a cheat have to be to fake scores on a computer from 1982?

"Hey, they'll think I'm REALLY cool now that I've faked my score on Chubby Gristle... heh heh heh."

    Most security is.
