So I'm thinking of getting a PDA

edited October 2007 in Chit chat
mainly for a bit of web browsing/ gaming (spec emu a must ;))/ video on the move. Anyone have one of these doohickeys and care to enlighten me on which is 'best', PPC or Palm? Looking to spend about 200 squid. Doesn't need to be a phone, and wifi is a must.

At the moment I'm being drawn to the Palm Tungsten TX, anybody got one?

I had every generation of Compaq/HP PPC PDA up until a couple years ago (mainly coz I worked there and got them at erm...discount).

Never used one of em for more than 2hrs..always got the impression they were a tech toy of very little actual use.

Phones pretty much store all you need and a psp/gp2x will play games/movies way better than a PDA.

My experience is unless your REALLY gonna use pocket excel (scoff) then why get a PDA when you could get a PSP/GP2X for cheaper and keep your phone numbers/contact info etc in your phone.

    Just my 2c.

on a similar note (sorry to hijack your thread!) I've been thinking of getting a tablet PC/laptop dealie (one of those laptops where the screen flips round and you can use a stylus) any recommendations/ones to avoid?

I love these little devices !

Just bought a Dell Axim X5v (managed to get it at a bargain 100 quid on ebay, normally about 150), 600+mhz which is pretty fast ! 640 x 480 VGA screen.

Bought an 8 meg CF card, have a ton of games on it, tons of emulators, music, movies to watch. PocketClive works very well, theres another Speccy emulator on it but i prefer Pocket Clive.

Its wireless but cant get it working with my net connection (yet). Also tells the time and you can set alarms ;)

I've got a Palm TX. Whether it'll be for you or not rather depends on what you want to do with it.

    The good bits:
    • The organizer apps (Calendar, Notepad, Contacts, etc.) are the best of any PDA going. I would personally stick with Palms to the grave for this reason alone.
    • The media capabilities are excellent given the unit's small size.
    • There are lots of excellent games, many of which are free.
    • There are two good 48K Spectrum emulators.

    The so-so bits:
    • Blazer is not a great web browser. Unless sites have been designed with it in mind, the screen size is too small for comfort and it lacks advanced features of typical desktop browsers.
    • Documents To Go allows you to view and make small edits to office documents, but you'd be hard pressed to knock anything decent together with it alone.
    • Versa Mail is a bit of a lottery. It works great with some mail systems, but not others.

    The crap bits:
    • Adobe Reader is near useless for anything but text-only documents.
    • The wireless capabilities don't support all but the most basic secure (WEP/WPA-PSK) networks. It's OK for me at home, but I can't access the VPN at work.

Nick recommended the Nokia N810 when it comes out, it looks awesome and if the price is right I think I'll get one.
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

that looks like a damn sexy machine, no sign of a speccy emu tho ;) looks as if it may be a bit out of my price range, but worth keeping an eye on, i could stretch to it.

    thanks for the replies all

i got a HTC Kaiser which is a phone/PDA combo and is fantastic. 8way dpad, tons of RAM. brilliant.

Asus used to be good for gaming/emulation.

Although if you did want gaming/emulation on a handheld just get a PSP. the emulation on it is phenomenal.

    DS with R4 and webbrowser?

Seconded. It's hard to remember life before the DS now. Quite apart from the games and emulators and MP3s, I can watch videos too. (Although I recommend headphones if you're watching Batman: The Animated Series in a pub.) There doesn't seem to be a decent notepad program for it though; I'm thinking of having a go at knocking one up when I've got some spare time.

I've got the Tungsten TX. It's great for occasional web surfing, but I mainly use it to stream net radio and play DivX movies from the memory card (Family Guy wherever I go!)

My 'friend' has said theres some amazing torrents out there for Pocket PC's to give you a ton of stuff, utils/games/emulators etc etc

Still still wish they did a Pocket PC with a 'gameboy' style control on the left hand side instead of in the middle. Love Warfare Incorporated on the PPC, brilliant Command and Conquer clone.
  • Fast forward nearly a decade, what's everyone got in their trouser pockets? F'nar!

    Mine's a Moto G4 Plus:
    4Gb RAM,
    64Gb ROM,
    1920x1080 display,
    5MP front camera,
    16MP rear camera,
    3,000mAh battery,
    fingerprint sensor,
    running Android 6.0.1
includes an SD card slot, which I haven't had a need to use yet.

And I only use it for the occasional phone calls. I've tried a few Android games and none of them have captured my attention for any length of time. The games I've played the most and still keep on it are a dot's and boxes game, and one of those 3D retro toy maze games.

I also installed an app called Spectrum Eyes, which basically converts your camera into a Speccy screen or you can convert pics to Speccy screens. Its only "limitation", which is unfair of me to call it that, is that it does not include any size other than the standard 256x192. Would love to see a Speccy pic using the full resolution size of whatever your camera is capable of, which in my phone's case I believe comes out to 4608x3456.

Aside from that, which Speccy-like games, Speccy emulators, and anything retro do you recommend or use on your phones?
    What now?

Fifty pence in cash and a used tissue.

  • Keys, chewing gum, a bundle of CEX vouchers and a nectar card. Oh, and some coins.

I'm still lucky enough not to be tied to a mobile phone. I have a DS + R4 cart so that I can have a blast on a few games whenever I get some train travel time.
