Fly Drive Holiday

edited November 2007 in Chit chat
im seroiusly thinking about doing a fly drive holiday across North America. sort of like starting at the east coast and driving all the way to california. was thinking taking about 3 weeks to do it so i can see as much as possible. probably camping or staying in motels along the way.

has anyone done anything like this before? (you guys, not in general)

i wont be doing it for ages mind you.

Three weeks will be tight... Take longer if you can...

And i'd be happy to purchase you a beer/coffee/whatever if you dropped by... Start at Atlanta and head west - I'm about 100 miles down the road.

yeah was thinking that (not just to visit you.) but ive been to new york b4, and i think it'd be a hassle starting from there, i suppose it'd be a toss of a coin whether i'd want to see new england on the southern hillbillys.

i suppose a month would do.

Yeah I would say 4 weeks at least. Your better driving through the south rather than the northern states I think, more to see (a lot of the northern states are very much the 'same' looking.

The southern states are each one distinctly different. I still have the camping equipment ready if you pass through Texas.

i think id buy a tent and some stuff when i get there. i imagine it'd be cheaper than here. hope you'd let a specchum pitch his tent in your garden though ;)

nah I could put you up. I would use the tent only for emergencies though...not sure it's too safe to be pitching a tent on some deserted highway (watch Deliverance before you go)....motels are dirt cheap if you don't mind semen stains on the ceiling.

nice one, i'll stay at yours for a week then. you best get some more food in i get pretty hungry. also i'll most likley be bringing some prostitutes with me, so bear that in mind.

he he. i would prolly camp in actual camp sites, rather than sleeping on the hard shoulder, maybe jellystone park, if i can find what state its in.

No need...we can goto 'The Hop' 2 mins from my apartment...you don't have to pay for them there when you have an English accent.

cool, wont be for ages anyway, i have to get my driving license first.

had a look at car rentals out of curiosity, you can rent a ford focus for 5 weeks for a grand, although i imagine the price would go up with secret charges.

I'm 91.3% sure you can get a better deal than that. I've hired a shit car before for $89 for a week.

Edit: near the time if you do it let me know and I'll research some cheaper 'non screwing the tourist' options.

Edit Edit: coast to coast in a ford focus....

Edit edit edit: ummm the mileage charge is going to be the killer.

i don't want to break down in the middle of death valley in soe cheap banger.

that quote i looked at had an unlimeted milage charge, but thats based on an estimate, so its already sort of added into the price. its probably estimated highly though. i guess cos i choose to pick up at JFK and drop off at LAX it realises i'd be driving it across the country.

like i say though it's only a rough idea of the price. it'd prolly go down with a bit of fine tuning, its 'herts' rental. i'd prefer to go with a well established company, just so my rotting corpse isn't found in an 'honest bobs' rental car.

Thinking about it thats not that bad a deal if the mileage is unlimited...especially as thats only 500 quid for you.

I keep tellin my mum to buy dollars while its so good for next time she visits.

3 weeks is too tight. Took me 2 months in a light plane to do a coast to coast adventure. Crossing the Sierra Nevadas, trying to beat the weather, in a plane with an 85 horsepower engine and a cruise prop is "character building".

Hey Winston. I just read a great book about 2 kids that flew coast to coast in a Piper Cub they rebuilt back in the 60s (youngest kids to do it). Really good book, you should check it out if your into that..

16 is very young to be an archeologist, and to drive! She must be a prodigy. Miles is a lucky bugger whichever way you look at it...

I believe that would be a corruption of the more venerable "Two River Rule".

Yes, as a kid, we did it in a right hand drive car, with a union flag on the side. :D Just for fun they'd put me in the passenger seat, not suprisingly really, Americans did a double take everytime we pulled in to a drive-through etc

We went from Maryland to Florida, down the east coast, and back up again, stopping at camp sites. Fantastic.

Why did we have a right-hand drive car? Diplomatic immunity. LOL uncle worked for the foreign office, and shipped his car over when he moved there.
