Half-Life - a film?

edited November 2007 in Chit chat
I've just been playing Half-Life Episode Two (I'll post my thoughts when I finish it), and it reminded me of the rumour of a film version of Half-Life. There's always rumours of movie/film versions of popular games, which mostly never come to anything (thankfully, as most films-of-games are rubbish, and even the best, such as the Resident Evil films, aren't too good as films in their own right), and probably Half-Life will never be immortalised (or more likely cheapened almost to oblivion) by a film (well, series of films, as the film studio would try to drag every drop of profit from the license).

But if there were to be a film made of the Half-Life games, what would you like to see? And what actors/actresses would you suggest?

A couple of interesting suggestions that I read on the 'net are that the film of Half-Life 2 should cover the seven day war, which of course would be interesting (and the film(s) could expand on any aspect of the games' backgrounds that are never mentioned or only hinted at), and that the film could be done entirely in first person view, seen from Freeman's eyes (although this would be difficult to tie with the show-the-Seven-Day-War idea), which I think might be very interesting if doen properly.

Any comments?

If someone was going to make a FPS into a film it should least be a good one like Perfect Dark,... (ducks for cover)

Thought the Doom movie wasnt that bad. Wasnt brilliant but was far better than i thought it would be.

Yeah, the Doom movie was fun. It wasn't going to blow everyone away with a fantastic storyline, but it was good action fun. And the first person section towards the end was a fantastic homage to the game - that was very well done.

Yeah that was very good. I thought the first 3 quarters were good but then it went downhill a bit but for a game-movie license it was better than i thought. Was expecting something dire

How about a LOTR type film, Legend of Zelda. I bet you could actually get a decent storyline with plenty of wiggle room for logical follow ups if it was a hit.

Silicon Dreams : The Movie. Now that would be awesome! 8)

Do it in three parts, of course.

    Actors:
Gordon Freeman = Edward Norton FTW.
Ely (Black Scientist) = Morgan Freeman of course...

I could probably think of others, but those are the must haves.

Be fair, yes PD is the best FPS ever (even Starglider knows it, though he pretends not to, for a laugh ;-) ), but the HL games are great.

Blimey, someone answering the original poster's question in a WOS thread! This forum ain't what it used to be

Oh, and please Andrew, never EVER use the acronym "FTW" - it's forever associated with warez kiddies posting their

    U = sux
    I M 1337

    type "language". *Shudder*

And for those of you who don't speak idiot:

"U = sux" means "you = sucks", meaning "you're rubbish", and

    "I M 1337" means "I am elite", meaning "I am the best".

and "FTW" means "For the Win".

Edit: Just realised how this might have read! Andrew, I'm certain'y NOT calling you an idiot. Well, unless you own a C64. Or laugh at Russell Brand. In which case you're beyond help...

Hmm, could Ed Norton be silent for the whole film?

I always knew FTW as Fuck The World. Ah well, learned something new today already!
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

No, I think you did call me an idiot :) Are you related to my wife?

(And yes, I read way way way to much Fark. That's where the FTW came from).

    /EPIC FAIL.

    Andrew

EDIT: And yeah, I do laugh at Russell Brand... but probably not in the way you think... in a far more... sinister... dark... and ... twisted... way.... :D

If you must talk about a Half-Life film, do it in a whisper. We don't want Hollywood to hear about it, and actually make a film. That would be wrong.

Films from games are always a bad idea. The main problem is that the result will always be degraded because video games are generally looked-down on as art and so no one with much talent or ability will attach themselves to the property. Secondly, the plots in games tend to be wafer-thin when compared to even the most stupid Michael Bay-directed Hollywood potboilers. To make a film from a game is to inevitably make a trashy action flick for teenagers. It's hard for it to be anything else.

Doom turned out ok as a movie, at least no worse than any other middle of the road scifi.

I was impressed by both Doom and Silent Hill.

A hell of a lot better than Mario, Street Fighter, Resi, DOA, Alone in the Dark...

I bet Hitman is pants aswell. Mind you, I thought the first Hitman game was rubbish anyway.

I've got that. Fantastic film. Reminds me of Hitchcock's stuff

    I should've said D.O.A. - Dead Or Alive.
