I would suggest Turmoil by Bug Byte and Jungle Trouble by Durell, both are a bit of a laugh for different reasons and don't take ages each go. Confuzion by Incentive is another very cool game.

Thanks for all the further suggestions!

Just out of interest, was there ever any Speccy game deliberately designed for a party situation? I suppose Trivial Pursuit comes the closest...?

Elite at a party... heck, that would be depressing. :D

How about new games? Cannon Bubble has a 2 player mode and a good soundtrack/nice sounds (requires a 128 though). Lots of fun to play.

There's that free Thrust-like one recently released by Cronosoft.
(...and of course Thrust itself (although I think the BBC Micro version is much better).)

Or Justin (another new one) if isometric games are your thing.

Has Pub Games by Alligata been mentioned yet? That would be good. I also agree CRL's Formula One would be a laugh, or any other game with gambling - Fruit Machines, horse racing etc..

Whilst I wouldn't exactly say it was specifically made for a party, I think FA Cup Football is a grossly misunderstood game and was designed very much for when a number of people are around the Speccy. It's simplistic management options and ability for up to 8 players to pick a number of teams, makes it ideal for a bit of light-hearted fun when there's a few of you playing. A lot of people immediately say the game is crap because you can just pick the best teams and you'll always win. But that isn't the point of the game. Where the game is best is if each player picks a one or two good teams, then picks lesser teams. That way everyone has a chance of producing a few surprising giant killing blows and taking the micky out of the other players. Whilst it still isn't a particularly great game, and it's now out dated and the teams have changed a lot since back when it was made, it is definitely in my opinion, one of the original 'party' style games on the Spectrum.

Brian Clough's Football Fortunes with it's board-game/computer game combination was definitely designed for a group of mates to play, as was Soccer Rivals, another football themed boardgame. Again not party games as such, but multi-player intended.

I doubt these games would be much fun for a party held today, but then again I can't see what kind of party would feature a ZX Spectrum as one of the main sources of entertainment anyway.

Totally agree with that. If you have 4 or so people its great to pick teams (or let the computer randomly choose teams) and then see who gets the furthest. Used to play that just a few years ago for a laugh as we would all put in a fiver and then the computer randomly selects our team and see which team would get the furthest. Great laugh it was

Daley's Decathlon or similar innit, it's competitive so will keep people interested and importantly each 'turn' only lasts about 30 seconds, so it's heavy rotation and stops people getting bored from having to wait their go.
