Ok well I think Geoff was having a pessimistic moment when we wrote that blog.

Think of it this way, If Led-Zeppelin released a new single in the same week that the Spice Girls released say a cover of Russ Abbots Atmosphere guaranteed that the Spice Girls would sell more copies.

In general the record buying public have no taste. Why should it be any different for the game buying public, again no taste.

Mindless decisions made by the mindless masses in a predominantly mindless yet comfortable society. That’s western world humans for you!

The way he has a go at old games though is a joke. At the end of the day you can dress up a game as you want with great sound, huge cut scenes, great graphics etc but its all about gameplay at the end of the day.

Considering most of his games were rip offs of other games its a bit of a joke hes slating those.

Borrowing concepts from classic videogames and subsequently adding furry mamals, spaced out gfx and outdated acidrock references to it does not sound as a very creative way of making videogames IMO. Perhaps Minter should have made a game that people can actually play, instead of being elitist about his own work.

To be fair, his games have been very popular, especially on the C64, but personally I wouldn't count him as a good games designer, all the more so since he so roundly slagged off Manic Miner, which to my mind is far better than every Minter game I've ever seen put together.

Technically, he seems to be a good programmer, though.

I won't comment as my opinion of Jeff Minter is well documented on these forums, sufficed to say if he did give up he wouldn't be missed...

    That is a comment.

I seem to remember that he also bats for the other team?
Not that there's anything wrong with that sort of thing, of course...
Especially not after the recent high-profile outing of a well-known WoSser! :p

anyway, Frogger is a good game, but I was pissed off that it didn't have the original arcade music.

    Well, the rumours started here.

I don't believe them though, obviously... *ahem*

Space Giraffe is not a particularly great game anyway, but it probably deserves to do better than it has. An indication of how poorly it has been received is it's high score table which shows only about 1200 people have played the game (while logged in to XBox live) since the score table was reset a month ago, with a lot of the scores showing people must have only played once and gave up.

I think the biggest mistake that was made with it was the demo, which was just bewildering to the point of almost deliberately saying "this game is to hardcore for people like you".

Why do so many people seem to hate Jeff Minter? I'm curious.
  • edited November 2007
I dunno about hating him, I certainly loathed his games, they were technically brilliant, just about as dull as duckshit to play. His fetish with llamas and camels got very very old very quickly too.

I'm quite the opposite with regard to his games - I love Llamatron and Revenge of the Mutant Camels and I've a soft spot for the likes of Gridrunner and Hover Bover. I've never played Tempest 2000 but Tempest X3 for the Playstation One is pretty-much a port of that with some tweaking and it's awesome.

What grabs me is that - not just here but elsewhere - there seems to be dislike-to-loathing for the man himself more than his games. I agree that his opinion on Frogger is completely wrong (it's great) as is his apparent take on Manic Miner but surely that's no reason to hate someone.

Same with me. First time it was quite funny and bizarre but by the 180000th time it was just dull. Most of his early games were just copies of famous games but with Llamas, nothing special.

Also read about him moaning about Manic Miner and obviously this article as well. If he wasnt so 'wacky' and was a hippy he would just be another forgotton 80's programmer.

It's his nastiness about and towards people who don't like his games. Claiming that they're playing it wrong, or they just don't get it, and Space Giraffe so is not Tempest, and you're all stupid for not buying it. Now, I'm sure he puts a lot of time and energy and love into his work, but that's still no excuse for being a dick.

    Frogger outsells his game 10-1

so that's the publics fault, not his shit game. nice attitude

The public prefer shit games but it's no reason to slag off Frogger.

Sounds like he needs a hug.....erm not from me though.

I'm very judgmental when it comes to games (and other stuff). Anything with a stupid title or camels/lamas in it is not going to get my time.

I did like tempest 2000 but that was a 'normal' game.

Get over yourself yer big nancy and rather than cry about frogger selling more than yours, take that knowledge on board and develop games people WANT and not just games you want to make.

I love frogger, that's why I wrote the simple one-liner "toader".

For me, Jeff's masterpiece was 1MB llamatron on the ST.

I never got into the mutant camel game though.

I think when he gets it right, his games are excellent.

Seems like he had a bad day. But I've seen other rants of his before, he used to insert a rant into some of his ST games doc files.

so where's his Manic Miner rant anyway?

Why does a has-been feel the need to rant about other peoples games anyway? Because they were better than his and after 20 something years he still can't believe it?

The only Minter game I ever got any enjoyment from was AMC the first one, and not on the C64 it was a remake where the camels actually looked like camels, not Lego monstrocities.

Minter should remove his head from his arse, it's 2007, not 1984.
    Every night is curry night!
