New Spectrum game available - Egghead 5

edited October 2008 in Games
Timed to coincide with Egghead's 18th birthday (although it fits in rather well with WoS's 12th as well), Egghead Round the Med. is now available to download from my website. Due to the game's size it only works on machines with 128K.

This time Egghead and friends have taken a holiday on his yacht, but have overdone the booze slightly. Egghead awakes to find his friends are missing - presumably left behind at some of the locations visited on the trip - so he'll have to find them and bring them back to the yacht. As they're likely to be nursing hangovers it might be a good idea to bring back some aspirin tablets, and perhaps something to take them with.

Some gamers aren't keen on puzzles and prefer pick-up-and-play gameplay, so there's an option on the menu to change the game type to a simple collect-em-up if preferred. Another issue some people had with Egghead 4 was that at 53 screens it was too small. Hopefully 140 screens will be enough for everyone this time, it certainly took long enough to design them. Some are inaccessible without certain items, unless you're playing the collect-em-up. Others are hidden, and I'm sure there'll be plenty of kudos to whoever discovers each of these screens first.

I'd like to thank Yerzmyey for providing another excellent soundtrack, and Graz who again delivered the goods with the loading screen. Great job, guys!

Have fun, and don't forget to report any hidden screens, bugs, cheats etc. Oh, and my site's here if you didn't already know:

Brilliant game ! Just had a quick go now, great soundtrack, very good gameplay. Enjoyable game.

    Congrats.

Also now look forward to Platform Game Designer II ;)

    Very nice.

I don't think there's any Spectrum gaming development I look forward to these days as much as a new Egghead game.

Only had a couple of brief shots and my initial impressions are mostly good with a few reservations (which were largely the same as with Egghead Entertains). I'll elaborate a wee bit later.

Am having issues with this POKE :-(

When in FIGUREHEAD (second room to the right of where you start) and exit left (where you come from) you re-enter the room on the right and fall through the floor to the lower-right of the screen and become stuck. Can't even move Mr. Egghead :-( PLUS the far left star stops moving.

EDIT It actually works similarly in other rooms, i.e. issues with going left, immediately re-entering from the right. Interesting results in some screens though, and does help with screens where one can't easily access the right hand side.

It's an excellent little game, great job there Mr. Jonathan!

The ONLY thing I look forward to on the Speccy is PGDv2 ... any news on that??????????????

Try 60678,0 instead -- I've only wandered around a few rooms and picked up some eggs in collect-em-up mode but it seems to work okay so far.

Thanks! Will report back if I have any other related issues.

I shall very much look forward to playing that in a bit. It's nice to have new Speccy games to play. The games lack a little graphical polish, but are always playable enough. And it's nice to play something new in 2007 that doesn't need a further 16 patches to run smoothly on your system!

Hmmm ... strangely similar to the Saucer menu?!?!? ;-)

    Looking forward to both nonetheless!!!

Another POKE: 60732,0 = fully invincible (use 48460,1 to kill yourself if you get stuck or 60732,116 to switch invincibility off)

If you just want to not die if you fall too far then 34537,24 should do the trick.

Has anyone mapped it yet? ;-)

Serious 2D fun - a little like Monty on the Run in spirit - there's a hint of that musically too.

    Regards,

    Shaun.

Yeah. Almost identicle (all the images and font differ - but hey! I've got time on my hands and can play around!) Saucer was getting to be too much like 'Hyper Active', visually. Not necessarily a bad thing. But 'Burger' is better! And doesn't have any burgers! And my 'enviroment' has gone down and getting it back up working is proving to be a GIT! How to waste so much time getting back to where you once was! Arrrgggghhhhh!

Burger for Xmas. Saucer for New Year.

And I have sat there working out a font this is 3 pixels by 4! And trying to make it work and look good! And you are having a go! You SOD! LOL!

Does the Burger come on a Saucer?

    (har har ... har?)

If you can come up with a better way to do the menu system then I will gladly employ it.

The source for that is still sitting on my machine in a reasonably advanced state, but with some months work yet to do. Before that something else has cropped up which means I could be starting on another game very soon. Don't hold your breath for PGD 2 just yet.

As for the next game, I have no idea what it will be yet, probably the usual Heath Robinson assembly of gameplay mechanic subroutines stitched together with a few randomly-arranged mnemonics. Possibly with spinning letters or symbols of some sort. I haven't done much with spinning symbols.

    'Yes'.

    I mean 'no'.

    I'm confused!

    What was the question?

an in-game screenshot could be better choice. perhaps.

BTW. never understand the 50/25 frames fashion. manic miner runs 12.5 frames and U.N.Squadron at less than 10 frames. Booth of them are rather decent games.
  • edited December 2007
It actually didn't quite look like 50fps ... it was purely static on my end. Maybe the JPG is a bit misleading ??? ;-)

    Yes, of course :).

Here is a map of 'COLLECT-EM-UP' version:

    http://maps.speccy.cz/maps/Egghead5.png

Unfortunately the map isn't completed now. I found 131 screens only, so 9 screens are still missing. Any clues where I have to search? ;-).

    Discovered locations and screens:
    Ship - 29 screens
    France - 20 screens
    Egypt - 11 screens
    Turkey - 10 screens
    Italy - 19 screens
    Gibraltar - 6 screens
    Malta - 5 screens
    Greece - 14 screens
    Spain - 17 screens

Some people are more sensitive to frame rates than others (i can see the difference between 25FPS and 50FPS and there was a time when the former would give me headaches to the point i couldn't go to the cinema; there are some CPC games where i can count the frame refreshes off!) but everyone is aware of it at some level.

Apparently Americans can tell that UK TVs are more flickery when they come to Britain (NTSC is 30fps whereas PAL is 25fps), so you can get sensitive to it without even noticing. Cinema is actually only 24fps, which is why "The Sound Of Music" is 7 minutes shorter on TV than it is when you saw it at the local flicks.
