Yeah, you're right. Well, the "subject matter" itself is not a big deal to me and I frankly do not give a damn about a person's sexual orientation - of course it would be a downer if you get the hots for a chick who then turns out not to be into males. I can look at those pictures by Oli Frey and still acknowledge his artistic skills but of course they "do nothing" for me. Actually, a few years ago someone on a fanart website made a contest which involved drawing a tied up guy, so just to piss off all those teen-aged girls with their mostly crappy pictures, I participated, made it into the runners-up and politely refused my prize, which would have been some gay manga. It was a case of "Cry with the wolves". For me it was merely some practice in drawing the male body in an unusual setting.
And it is still stigmatized in our modern society (of course, more by bible-bashers and/or people with low education). Look at all the trash who always make it a point to let everyone know who much they detest "fags". I couldn't care less.
Speaking of art quality in CRASH, it seems to me there was a really significant change around 1990 not only in CRASH but in all computer magazines. In 80s there were a lot of artwork created by artists and hand drawn maps in magazines. Later and now, there are only game screenshots and graphics taken from the game. I don't think it was caused by buyers' preference change. It's rather laziness of magazine editors and improvements of computer graphics. When in 80s player sprite consisted of few pixels there was a need for nice handdrawn picture of the player. When computer graphics improved, you could just take the player sprite from the game and fire the artist to save money.

Fair enough but having jokes about 'brown love' doesnt help much does it !
I dont mind if Oli was gay/straight/albino/purple with pink spots, top top artist and i'm happy as anything he still does a lot of Retro Gamer covers. Got the Oli Frey book a while back and its great to look at, brings back some excellent memories.

As has also been mentioned, it was the shift over to DTP that made a big change... where Oli once used to draw directly onto the pages (particularly for things like the margin characters), when things shifted to Quark Xpress or whatever, some of that "spontaneity" was lost with the precision placement...
