Urban upstart

edited February 2008 in Games
thought id start a thread on this classic game...mainly due to a certain persons nick, and it was mentioned in the hobbit thread

ive just been looking round google at richard shepherd software......i know they were shit but ive always had a nostalgic softspot for devils of the deep (ok ok shoot me now)
and found this bit of trivia on mobygames

Richard Shepherd Software

Trivia:
The Spectrum cassette-based magazine 16/48 refused to review the company's titles, as it believed they were so bad. As a result, they never covered Urban Upstart, written by Pete Cooke and quite highly regarded by others.

It's too early on a Sunday afternoon to debate something like this.

No, I think I will head back to the proverbial haysack.

    Well... Bloody outrage that eh?

I've just had to google 16/48, I hadn't heard of them until now.

I suppose if they closed their minds like that, they reduced their scope immeasurably, and missed out on great games like this.

For me, Urban Upstart has a fabulous, bleak atmosphere created on simple hardware.

I liked all the early Pete Cooke adventures; they might not have been masterpieces of programming and graphics, but they were really well designed with logical puzzles and a bit of a plot. I suppose what really made Urban Upstart above the others was the concept; no goblins, no treasure and humour that almost seemed straight out of the Young Ones.

Anyway, Invincible Island and The Inferno are also well worth a look as they also buck the Richard Shepherd Software trend. The jury's still out for me with Ski Star 2000 though.

That bit of trivia is sadly true; I spoke to 16/48's editor at a Microfair, recommending Urban Upstart for review, and he told me that it was policy that they didn't review Richard Shepherd titles because "they're all crap". :( I pointed out that UU was the sole exception, but he wouldn't be swayed...
I never make misteaks mistrakes misyales errurs — oh, sod it.
