sausage muncher

edited February 2008 in Chit chat
i had a sausage casserole this weekend, 'twas very tasty. it came out of one of those colemans packets. All i had to do was to add the sausages, onions, mushrums, water, and a pepper. bake it all and serve with a dollop of mash. very tasy. ive bought a load more coleman sauces too! does anyone have any faves?

i think im going to do chicken casserole next.

Nah! I'm stopping now that's just too easy!

I did actually have one of those Oscar Meyer microwaveable Smokies in a bun last night on my break at work (like Fast Franks but a little more tarty). Had some with cheeses in the middle the other week but they were nasty, the Eckrich Cheese franks are much tastier.

Yeah cheesy sausage isn't kosher. I like mine clean and skinless.

I just wish I could get bog standard boring pork and beef links here. Everywhere sells Bratwursts, and the links are just made from the awful herby sausage meat they sell in big sausage packages (kinda lookslike that awful smelling crap that you can buy for dogs).

I'd kill for a good old packet of Walls Sausages, or even Kwik Saves No Frillz sausages would do.

I miss real sausage, the bratwursts they sell here are tasty but they're too much for just a sandwich or for breakfast time. But the regular sausage here is bloody awful, tastes like cheap and nasty herb sausages, and even if I can get some that doesn't taste like it's 50% mixed herbs it still gives me mad indigestion :(

i have some walls sausages in my fridge, i might have them for my tea tonight, a tin of baked beans, some toast, a fried egg would do nicely on the side. or i could get a battered sausage and chips from the fish'n'chip shop. that'd be nice.

    Bastard!

I still have some Bachelors Mushy Peas, and I make good chips, I know this because people have told me before about how good they are.

....I've been clinging onto a Galaxy Caramel for weeks too, I'll have to eat the bugger soon otherwise it'll go out of date :(

I've got a couple of slightly mis-shapen Peanut Butter kitkats in the fridge, and my wife scoffed the last Kinder Bueno :(

and I have some Walkers crisps (which are actually pretty crap, but they're better than Lays).

There are 2-3 English import shops here in Houston...I can get 'English' sausages here at about $6 for a pack of 12...if you have the store 'fiesta' where you are..the bigger ones carry imported frozen international food..I get em from there.

ha ha, yeah you have to be pretty thick not to be able to make proper chips yourself. do you ever make healthy chips? i like to cut the tatters into chip form, boil them till they are soft, drain dribble oil on them then bake till the skin in crispy. they are very healthy.

the one thing i would miss in america would be robinsons orange, or at least a dillute orange. when i was there i had to drink gatoraid for a few weeks, my pee turned a funny color. it was like sunny delight with added e numbers.

Schwartz Sausage casserole in the oven now,

1 Packet Schwartz Sausage caserole mix
    6 Sausages from village butchers
3 leeks and some mushrooms from farmers market.
2 Tesco Value peppers (not many farmers grow em round here)
1/2 Pint of best tap water.

May even crack open a can or two of Scrumpy Jack

Will report back in a couple of hours.

I've had an unopened bottle of Robinsons orange in the cupboard since September, I'm saving it until I finish off my bottle of Dilutey Vimto.

Alas Beanz I don't think Indiana has Fiesta, and even though the area I live in has plenty of imports from the UK (apparently, I've only met 2 and that was a Scottish woman, and a guy from Suffolk or Surrey or something, and both of them have been here so long you couldn't even tell they weren't yanks).

What pissed me off as well is apparently Miami has so many British ex-pats apparently the Wal-Marts there have whole aisles not just for Mexican and Afro-Caribean cuisine, but British too. so why can't the Wal-Marts in Indiana at least have a dusty little corner with a few bottles of Quatro, Cresta, Pickled Onion Space Raiders and a some bags of Kung-fu crisps in it or something :D

Boozey, you may have spotted a gap in the market there y'know, you could open your own chain of Booz-Mart shops selling British food to the ex-pats. Or a Freek-Mart selling to the natives :P

Re. Colemans packets - too much hassle, you have to prep. all the veggies yourself, I usually stick to the jars. There's one in the Sausages Tonight range called Ranch-style barbeque, has lots of paprika and suchlike in it, well worth a try. Last time I had some bacon & half a tin of beans to finish off so I slung them in the pan as well :D

Don't you have a World Market near you?

Don't you have a World Market near you?

    Andrew

The closest one was on the way to Louisville Kentucky Or St. Louis Mizouri, both have closed. Plus the prices were extortionate, $3.00 for a can of Orange Tango, $3.50 for Apple Tango and $5.50 for Cherry or Blackcurrant Tango.

$2.75 for a Drifter (although I'll admit I bought one, cos' they're one of my fave Choccy Bars).

If me and the wife ever drive out of town anywhere, we always check the local ethnic markets and things for British stuff, and I'm always on the lookout for Indian food too. In some places you can get the bog standard Pataks stuff, but it's jars and you have to make it yourself.

All the frozen curries I've managed to get hold of while I've been here are a joke, they taste OK, but I got some frozen Vindaloos from a Trader Joes in Indianapolis, and they weren't even hot. I mean really not hot, in fact they were barely even Spicy, I like hot food but even a curry novice could have handled one of those with great ease.

But then again I am one of these ones who likes their curry to take the skin off the roof of your mouth and enable you to see through time while you're eating it.

Sometimes I like to go up to the serve yourself hot counter in my local Tescos, where they have all sorts of hot cooked meats in sealed plastic bags (e.g. chicke wings etc.) and get a big spicey sausage, then take it home and munch on it with a nice glass of Merlot.

Haven't been doing this as much lately though, because all they seem to have lately are bags and bags of chicken breasts, which I'm not really into. I went into Tescos the other day to look at the hot counter and it was being blocked by two Romanian Big Issue sellers who were busy poring over each and every bag in the counter, which put me off a bit...

At Christmas time here in Belfast they organise a Christmas market just outside the town hall for a few weeks, with a lot of stalls offering delicious food from different countries and one or two beer tents. When the Christmas market is on I like to visit the German stalls and fill my mouth with hot, thick German sausage (Bratwurst) in a bap. It is very tasty, especially with long lines of mustard and ketchup laid along it.

    Yum! :D
