I Will Always Love You (the song)

edited February 2008 in Chit chat
Yesterday I was discussing this with a mate, I prefer the Whitney Houston version, but he prefers the original Dolly Parton version. Which do you think is the best?

I admit that the Dolly Parton version is far more emotional, but I still prefer Whitney Houston's version.

I've included a third option, in case anyone else did a cover version that anyone prefers - please only include covers of this song, not any other song that is also called "I Will Always Love You" but has different words or music.

Why is there no box for none of them!!?!

I dont like this song much, but if I have to pick one it would be dolly's.

The song is a 90's housewifes favourite, I remember many a housewife belting this one out extra loud, from either their house or car broadcasting their musical taste to the world.

I dont know why but this song reminds me of bitchy, Montego driving, keeping up with the joneses type house wives of the early 90's.

Other songs along this vein were the Bangles - Eternal Flame, and the Latter Celline Dion - My Haert Will Go On.

I have never liked this Genre.

Yeah, and what about the "I need to vomit" option?

Ewgf you are a big girl's blouse!

EDIT - Houston, she has a problem, Parton has the bigger tits.

I like the Bangles' Eternal Flame, but not My Heart Will Go On (it's not a sad song, it's a dirge).

Well, Eddy (from the brilliant comedy program Bottom) would like that - his ambition, during his twelve seconds as a Buddist, was to be reincarnated as a bra, so a blouse, especially for a big girl, would be great too!

    Aaaaaaaaaaagh. No.

    I chose other.

I can't find it, but I'm sure I heard a cover by these guys :-P
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

I voted for Parton - the far superior original.

Besides, Whitney "Fucking" Houston is one of 3 women Divas I would have no trouble or guilt in punching them in the face. The other two are Mariah "Fucking" Carey and Jennifer "Fucking" Lopez.

    I FUCKING HATE THEM ALL!

sounds like a discussion you'd have up brokeback mountain. :)

Well that's just ruined my day, I can just hear that awful screechy chorus in my head now.

...and the Fatboobs Parton version is just as bad, sounds like somebody strangling cats.

I had forgotten about this song entirely.

What next a pole on that shite that was at number 1 for 13 weeks by Brian Adams "Everything I do, I do it for the money for a decent acid peel"?

    Jeez :D

Don't know about Acid peel and acid bath would be more enjoable than that song. Again one of those sad housewives favourites.

Was gonna say the same thing. This does nothing for our WOS image, i think Lemon64 are laughing their heads off right now !

No matter how high/drunk i am i wont have a chat to my mates (or even argue) about what the best version was ! WHat next ?

"I was chatting to my male friends one night and we were arguing which was the best group, Take That or Boyzone ??"

Have you all finished? Honestly, the "er, we're all far too manly to listen to music like that" style replies don't exactly impress, you know. I mean, you know what they say about those who protest too much...

Anyway, I have it on good authority that Scottie, Frobush, DM and the rest consider this to be the greatest song of all time, although they'll deny it in an attempt to appear macho:

'Love You' that is, not 'Grandma'!

You cant weasle your way out of that. Grown blokes in their 30's discussing what version of 'i will always love you' is just wrong. There can be no excuse ewgj i'm afraid.

I think even if some of us listened to that song and secretly liked it, discussing what the best version of it in public is a crazy thing to do !

I voted Parton. I've got the album, dig the lilting voice and the slight tremor of melancholy she can bring to a song set in a major key. I hate the WH version as it lacks any subtlty and set of a string of appaling copycat power ballads.

I also have a couple of pink shirts. I wore one on my wedding day. They make me look a bit less imposing.
