What an idiot. Another stupid auction.

edited February 2008 in Sinclair Miscellaneous
I found this auction today on biggest Polish auction portal (Ebay isn't popular in Poland, everybody uses this Allegro site):

http://www.allegro.pl/item319334501_zx_spectrum_pl_zarob_na_starych_komputerach_.html

The guy is trying to sell internet domain address www.zxspectrum.pl

The funny thing is that he wants for it 5000 Polish zlotys, that is 2000$ or 1400 euros:)
Let me roughly translate what he says:

Earn money on old computers!
Collectors and snobs are looking for old hardware. The prices of old stuff are rocketing. The leader of prise rise is Zx Spectrum. This simple and ideal domain address will bring all the collectors and snobs to your site.

Has he escaped from mental hospital recently? :)

I've never thought as myself as a snob, in fact I hate snobs, the snobs are scummier than the people they so frequently call scum.

Maybe I was wrong maybe I am a snob after all I got a Spectrum years after they'd been released and I got my second Speccy for free.

Makes me one hell of a snob that does.

Well I say bloody marvelous this Spectrum scene is, not a commoner or a heathen in sight.

    *Adjusts monicle

    Bloody peasants :D

Well, snob is a word both in Polish and English which I believe have the equal meanings. He uses this word.

I don't know what he meant exactly by this word, but I can make a try to guess:

People who belong to elite have rare customs and behaviors. They go to opera, wear tophats, use peculiar vocabulary and do other things that normal folks don't do.

Snobs are copying this behavior to make an impression that they belong to elite too.

So he says: there are snobs among us, who believe that love to old computers is rare, so this hobby makes you elite. Although they don't actually like old computers, they will buy themselves an old computer to make an impression on other people. So you can earn money on them.

Of course it is all rubbish.

Indeed, a true snob would find our love for retro a factor of poorness, weither we had money or not.

A true snob would not be able to comprehend the purchase of an old computer or it's software when there are new and shiny things to be bought right now, for lots of cash no doubt :D

I checked "snob" at English Wikipedia:

A snob, guilty of snobbery, is a person who adopts the worldview that some people are inherently inferior to him/her for any one of a variety of reasons including real or supposed intellect, wealth, education, ancestry, etc Often, the form of snobbery reflects the offending individual's socio-economic background. For example, a common snobbery of the affluent is the affectation that wealth is either the cause or result of superiority, or both as in the case of privileged children. However, a form of snobbery can be adopted by someone not a part of that group; Pseudo-intellectual is a type of snob. Such a snob imitates the manners, adopts the world-view and affects the lifestyle of a social class of people to which he or she aspires, but does not yet belong, and to which he or she may never belong.

So there are two types of snobs:

    - the one who boasts about his wealth
    - the one who pretends tha he is intelectual or artistic or has noble ancestors
or any other thing he values high.

I agree completely that to be a Spectrum enthusiast you need neither to be rich nor have polished manners. So sorry, Zx Spectrum is not
attractive to snobs. There are no snobs around us, only true believers :)

The true snobs were BBC owners. C64 owners longed to be snobs, whereas us Spec-chums were as common as muck!
