i wouldn't mind having a shot at one of these. what are every ones thoughts on them. do you need a super fast computer, a decent internet connection, a copy of the game, etc.

It helps to know what type of multiplayer game you're talking about. I play first person shooters, and although my system is fine (specs below), it is beginning to show the strain with some games.

I play Team Fortress 2, Enemy Territory Quake Wars, Counterstrike Source, Day Of Defeat Source, Call Of Duty 4.

    Specs:

    AMD Athlon 64 3000+
    2Gb RAM
    Nvidia GeForce 660GT 128Mb AGP8X
    Soundblaster Live! soundcard

The other specs aren't really important. So as you can see, it's not exactly low, but some games (especially Enemy Territory) are straining at even below top settings.

If it was other types of games, those specs may be plenty. But I can't comment without knowing what you're after.

Well I play most evenings online, especially at the moment Team Fortress 2. It's probably best if you know someone who plays online to go round their place and have a bash. The first thing you need to do is have a go.

FPS games can be great, they can be shite, but they are definitely the ones played more regularly than others.

Well, he could also try the "old" Enemy Territory, which should run pretty well on a machine even a few years old, not to mention it's a free game. I still regularly play it.

There are tons of free MMORPGs out there too, but they're often plagued with immature abuse-yelling kids, cheaters/botters and lag spikes (and can of course get tedious at times with the samey "quests" aka collect x items from monster y). I play Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst (free game) on a free private server, it's not a real MMORPG since you can only play in teams of up to 4 people and graphically it's not as good as newer PC games, but its console background means it's more action-orientated which I prefer to the point-and-click handling of all those MMORPGs.

I'm a big Battlefield 2142 player. Play at least 3 times a week, its gotta be the best multiplayer 'quick blast' online game going. I like Supreme Commander too but I get pissed off coz I suck at it online.

I *love* Enemy Territory. It plays really well on my 5 year old system.

A good server for ET is 213.19.130.64

The trouble is these days, if you download ET, you're going to also be downloading a shed load of mods whenever you connect to a server.

Also, I like playing True Combat: Elite, which uses Enemy Territory as its base. However, it's a more realistic modern day terrorist/counterinsurgency type game. It's less rushing around at high speed than ET is, and more about tactics.

Ooh, are you a regular visitor to that server? I may join you for a game if you are one day.

Anyone else playing Quake Live? Been having a crack at it over the weekend - can't hit a brick shithouse with a lightning gun but what the hell... capture the flag games are good fun. P'raps we could organise a WOS match sometime?
