Sadly most of the promo's I've ever seen for that era only showed 16bit footage.

I remember it very well in John Menzies. Seeing Target Renegade on all three formats, and the moment I saw the jump kick move on the Speccy version, I knew it was best. The moment I remember less fondly was when they did the trailer for Our Run. First they showed the arcade, then the Amiga, ST, C64 ... and finally the Spectrum version. I was embarrassed standing looking at it in the shop! The monochrome coupled with the jerky movement was diabolical, and anyone claiming that the C64 was a better games machine had plenty of ammo there. "Out Run"'s comversion was the beginning of the end for the Spectrum as a force in gaming.

Don't knock the conversion of Out Run - It might have been slow and monocrome but the graphics were really good. The C64 version while fast was crap.

you can forget OutRun and pick up ChaseHQ.. OutRun developers said that double road at middle of levels took too much memory.. but ChaseHq has no problem with that.

It would have been interesting to see how the original OutRun Europa would have turned out on the Speccy.

Chase HQ cheated slightly by not showing any cars during the roadsplit - you'll notice that they all zoom off into the distance when you approach the junction.

I definitely remember Boots or WHSmiths doing chart video loops during 1986 - it was what alerted me to the Paperboy coin-op conversion at the time.

    hello

just wondering, would these video promos count as something that could be included in the WOS archive(maybe take out c64,amstrad,etc and just leave ZX adverts).maybe, maybe not.thank you.

I used to regularly venture into Boots, who showed videos of the latest games (probably for a year or two) around 1985-1986. I never bought a game based on watching the video, instead basing my game purchasing decisions on reviews in Crash, SU, YS etc ...

The videos were obly good for going 'oooooooh ahhh' to when an impressive game was featured.

The graphics on the Spectrum version were in terms of scale and detail the most faithful of all the original versions, but that's what made it too slow. The C64 version didn't have any roadsplits, but it was miles more playable than the Spectrum version. I know which one I'd rather have had on the Spectrum. The C64 version was too easy though I admit that.

I hate to say it, but those video loops in Boots tempted me to hassle for a Commodore 64 for Christmas 1986 :)

All on the strength of 'PARALLAX' and 'IRIDIS ALPHA'
