Today Panama Joe sits at number 91 in the all time best list on WoS, just ahead of Gunfright.
I must admit I didn't know this game back in the day but I do know it now thanks to WoS. It often gets a mention in these forums. 1984 was the year when I was Speccy mad, and read the magazine reviews etc so I'm surprised that I didn't know it and it prompted this poll.

    I had heard of this game, at least under the name of Montezuma's Revenge as it appeared on the Atari 2600 and some other systems, but I'd never known that there was a Spectrum version until well into the emulation era.

    It's a bit hard to judge games retrospectively, but although it looks nothing special now, I'd have thought it would have been OK at the time, and possibly just early enough to have been an influence on Jet Set Willy and the like. Better than Gunfright though? No way.

    It was part of a Sinclair Research 6 games pack. That's how I came to play it.
    I got that from the shop just after I had bought my +2, because they'd knocked the price off a good deal and they wanted to keep me as a customer...

    I played it because it had an Interface 2 ROM version, which I loaded into the Spectrum Diagnostics board (spare 16k pages in the flash ROM can be used for anything).

    I have mentioned Panama Joe a number of times before on various WoS threads. Great game!

    I only heard about this game in the Retro Gamer mag focusing on Mario's 25th anniversay.
