Wiki help

edited March 2008 in Chit chat
Howdy,
I want to put some sort of wiki up on my web space, but as the server it's on doesn't support the most up to date versions of SQL and PHP, I can't use anything like mediawiki which was my first choice. Getting the software versions updated is not an option as I don't rent the space and having already asked they refuse to do it anyway without an upgrade of the server account, which isn't mine.
Are there any wiki-type softwares that I can use online (I'll be the only editor of content) that don't require this sort of database background?
I just want to use a wiki as I hate blogs (already tried to use one for content updating before and it was a pain in the arse) and wikis are easier for just throwing content up there without having to heavily code and make things wonderful for all resolutions and stuff like that. I just want to shove content, text and graphics, up onto the internet instead of wasting my time with the back-end technicalities (that's reserved for the missus) of the html and all the boring shit.
Basically I want to write and publish, but be able to cross-link pages too, which is why a wiki seems ideal.
I don't really want to rent my own web space.
Anyone who can understand the stream of crap above got a recommendation?

I'm not going to make a recommendation, but I would suggest you check out WikiMatrix - it lists most of the Wiki engines out there, and allows you to specify your requirements (including storing the content in files, etc)... it will then suggest which wikis you should try.

    Very handy. Very handy indeed.

Okay. You want some installable software with a page history which uses file based storage and is Free and Open Source.

The following 33 Wikis match your criteria:

BoltWire, ButorWiki, Daisy, DokuWiki, ErfurtWiki, FlexWiki, Friki, GeboGebo, Giki, ikiwiki, JAMWiki, JaWiki, JSPWiki, KeheiWiki, LunaWiki, MoinMoin, MoniWiki, Oddmuse, Perspective, PhpWiki, PmWiki, PodWiki, ProWiki, PukiWiki, ScrewTurn Wiki, TiddlyWiki, Triki-Wiki, TWiki, UseMod, VQWiki, Wala Wiki, wxWikiServer and yawiki
Now I only need to compare them to see which offer the page display features I want, because I don't want to have to do all that tweaking crap either before I start.

    You're my hero :)

    Coo.
I honestly didn't think it would suggest that many. I would consider "tweaking" your answers to get the number lower, if you can.

Also, have a look at OpenSourceCMS - you can think of it as a "try before you don't-buy" way of checking out various content management systems. They have about half-a-dozen Wikis I think, not checked to see if they cross-ref with your list or not, but it features a couple of the "biggies". Let's you see what you're letting yourself in for ;)

As a guide, try specifying the language you'd like it in. Personally I'd go with PHP, but you may prefer perl or something.
Adding PHP to your requirements gets the list down to a much more manageable 10 Wikis: BoltWire, DokuWiki, ErfurtWiki, Giki, LunaWiki, MoniWiki, PhpWiki, PmWiki, Triki-Wiki and Wikepage.

Of those, I'd likely pick out DokuWiki and phpWiki as starting points for a comparison. But again, that's my personal preference.

Alternatively, you can specify a few more options in the Search.
