The solution here is quite simple - My son browses these forums (13 years old), as he's quite a fan of speccy games.

I make sure that certain people (BigBadMick, Mile, MelTheBell etc) are on the ignore list. They have been for quite some time now! I also caution him not to go near the chit-chat forum, but if he clicks "new posts", then he gets a blend of the useful speccy posts along with the utter crap that goes on in chit-chat.

If there was a way to filter the new posts by forum, that would be ace. In fact, EAB (English Amiga Board) has a "today's posts/OT posts" link that does just that. Why can we not have that one?

    D.

Perhaps some sort of forum equivalent of a swear box is in order - where by the swearer has to make a forfit for each and every nasty word she (or he, it's not just the women with foul fingers) posts.

For example - the typists with the profanic digits should be banned for a day and get a verbal beating off of all the regular posters in a new thread entitled "The BigBadMick, Mile, MelTheBell Punishment Thread".

Or the obscene offensive poster has to folk out the cash to pay the travelling fees to the nearest forum member to her (or him) in order to receive a quick beating with some sort of blunt instrument (although this may backfire - I may have to swearing more often).

I've said this before - I have kids that read these forums. Should I ban them? One of them is 7 and loves playing chuckie egg and generally downloading games to play in SPIN. Should I tell him not too because the adults can't moderate their language?

This ISN'T a kids forum! Its a spectrum forum, where everyone is welcome, pertaining to a few rules.

Let me tell you something, the internet is NOT for kids, unless supervised by adults. I'd never let my kid sit alone on the internet, until the kid is 16 or so.
Any parent that lets their 7 year old roam freely on the www is a very irresponsible adult.
Are you telling me, you're THAT kind of a father?

Besides, you can download software that automatically puts a '*' in a place of a swear word.

Or you could decide to be smart and implement a filter in these forums, where the user can choose to have swear words filtered out.
Then there would be no need for such a childish discussion!

FogartyLee, this is not a personal attack against you btw, I was just using your example as you had written.
(Just so you don't think I have anything against you, we're allowed to discuss things in a heated way without harm :) )

I don't think you should ban anyone for foul language, thats a censorship that belongs to the previous century.
(Unless of course its a random person that posts ONLY swear words, i.e. spam)

By the way.....why not just ban your kids? :)

Remember, we ALL grew up without the internet and we only had our spectrums and we enjoyed it just as much.
    We didn't lose anything.

Besides, shouldn't your kid be PAYING the author of Chuckie Egg to play the game? Just like we did back then?
So you're encouraging your kids to steal software, that certainly is very parentlike of you.

(yes, this 2nd post is meant in a lighthearted manner, don't take it seriously.)

    Bitchy. Ignore.

Or silly idiots could just stop swearing when there is absolutely no need.

No children allowed here. Please discuss.

Frobush, by the sound of your post, I'd say you were FogartyLee's 7 year old kid.

In which case, call you daddy, and you go enjoy your mommy-dearest's tea......

I thought everyone did this: think of the World Wide Web as you'd think of London. It contains plenty of bits where kids can have safe fun, and some distinctly dodgy bits which should be kept well away from. No one in their right mind would let their seven year old go to London unsupervised.

I'd say it's not the swearing that is the problem, more the post content, and there's no automatic filtering you can put in which will handle that. Best you can do is put in an "Unsafe for minors" button on each post that people can click on, and then put a filter on this for any accounts owned by minors (but that's a pig to implement properly in itself).

Either that or we could all act like decent adults so no filtering is needed.

I might be able to do that one, probably about 98% of the time ;-) Let's go for that choice, what say?

I go for freedom of expression.
To be who we are, of what is a part of us as an individual.

No one is an idiot, or dimwitted, or an "indecent adult", just because of a few swear words.

Besides NOONE on the planet, throughout all of earths history has EVER taken any kind of damage, mentally or physically by swear words.
    Think on that one, thanks.

Btw, I don't know frobush, am just having fun with him like hes having fun with me with his childish retarded reply to my initial post.
    Innit frobush? :P

NickH, the London anaology is quite good.
If swear words are like grafitti, well that never hurt anyone, apart from it looks really ugly.

Anyway, we should be ourselves, we've done quite well considering all the other forums out there with a lot of hate.

    EDIT...

    http://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/showthread.php?t=11942
    *MOST IMPORTANT: POLITENESS*

These are "family-friendly" forums visited by people of all nationalities, races, ages and backgrounds. These guidelines (and especially the ones politeness) are intended to maintain this "family-friendly" atmosphere.

    * Keep the tone and content of your posts respectful and polite (even if you're angry about something).

    * Rudeness has no place on these forums. Friendly banter is a part of WoS, but please don't post something you wouldn't say to a friend.

    * Do not attack, harass, threaten or insult other forum members, either in public or via PM.

    * We all swear every now & then, but please try to keep it at a minimum. Remember - there may be children watching.

    Read the rest too.

One of the sites I visit has a "Playpen" section in the forum. This is where members can vent off steam and get mad and say what they like. It's like "Chat" but x-rated. Perhaps that might work here? Or would that be just me surgesting something childish and retarded?

    EDIT - spelling
  • edited March 2008
No one ever see the episode of Spongebob Square Pants where they use "sentence enhancers" f*&kin' hilarious!

Anyways... what was this thread about again? erm....

    Thats a pretty good idea!
That way, no one would require filters or software AND the forums could accomodate both adults and kids.

You see what you can accomplish in your mind, when you're not being so emotional, retarded and childish? :P

(yes am just kidding with you, relax and peace.)

Why would I be F**************** because a mod would oppose my forthcoming of issues?

We've seen a lot worse in here than me and only one of them got banned (CornishDavey if I'm not mistaken(?))

Tell you what, why don't you let FogartyLee reply to his own post that was intended for him and you try to resist the urge to kiss ass of a mod? :)

By the way, yes I've read the rules, a few times, albiet long ago, I couldn't remember they were so "strict".
And it seems not many of them are adhered to in the strictest sense.

So it seems, you should practice what you preach ;)

Everything I say is going to be turned into some sort of flame so F*CK IT!

The 'banning' stuff was a dig at my posts and not FogartyLees. And the poster saying that this isn't a children's forum when the rules state that this IS A FAMILY FORUM just get my goat (go on - have a free dig).

In my world my posts were written in jest, but if people can't see that then I'm sorry.

Who would have thought a thread about Paxman's pants could cause such a kerfuffle!

I'll readily admit to my language being a bit colourful here at times. I'm that way in life too, much to my wife's annoyance. The way I see it, if the mods don't want us to swear in our posts then fine, I won't - it's not going to bring down my quality of life. I'm sure most of those who post some choice words would moderate their language if asked nicely. What I don't like though is people taking the moral high ground and insinuating that I'm some kind of moral/social retard with limited vocabulary simply because I talk (or type) in a way that they don't agree with.

Dude ... I didn't put my "humour" well enough into the sentence. You said "Words fail me." My reply was "No, they don't!" That is, your words did not fail you, and your reply was legitimate.

    That was all.

Our worlds seem to intersect somewhat because I took your post(s) as a lighthearted jab. :-)

Ah. I thought it was split - the "No, they don't!" aimed at my "Words fail me." post and the 'legitimate reply' referring to the other poster's (I'm sorry - I don't have the decency to remember your name!) post.

Oh take it easy. I had also written something funny too and agreeing with another post of yours, but I don't think you saw it, its on the end of page 2.

I'm just having a little fun here, what I mean is more humourous than in a serious tone.
I'll admit I could use a little more tact&tone in my presententation of my humour.

So I apologise if I came across insulting, that was not fully my intention. English isn't my first language, so not everything I write makes sense all the time.
That and I'm blonde too, so that really helps.

Anyway, I had undestood what you meant and yes this is a family forum and the tone here generally is very decent compared to other forums where there are even more swear words.

But I do agree with ZnorXman that using swear words is in no way an indication of intelligence. Thats just something teachers told pupils, its an old wives tale. Dosen't make sense.

So, frobush, lets play Way of the exploding fist now shall we? :)
