More tabloid nonsense

edited March 2008 in Chit chat
Yesterday's Daily Mirror, announcing the death of Neil Aspinall, said that he "was known as the fifth Beatle".

What utter bollocks -- although he was a member of the Beatles' entourage, there have been many people called "the fifth Beatle", most of them with better justification. Probably the best-known was Brian Epstein, whilst the best-justified was Stuart Sutcliffe (who after all was in the Beatles in their early days).

Still what else can you expect from a tabloid.

I've heard that 5th Beatle thing so many times, you left Pete best of your list.

Soon there will be more 5th Beatles than there were proper Beatles.

In other news teachers have been saying that the Army is wrong to use schools to attempt to recruit new soldiers.

It was said at a recent N.U.T. ( nut is about right) conference that the army should be banned from recruiting in schools. They say that dont tell the whole truth and glam it up and pray on the poor, under acheiving teens from areas with poor job prospects.

Bloody right, better than having a load of unemployed youths, hanging around street corners, up to no good and sponging of the state.

Teach them some discipline, co-dependance and before they leave a worthwile trade. At least this will get them off to a good start.

    What is up with teachers!!??!!

Stories about "Yob Culture", and crap like "Kerry Katona caught smoking crack in burnt out car".

All stuff that nobody with half a brain really cares about.

I have heard Stuart Sutcliffe, Pete Best, George Martin, Brian Epstein, Neil Aspinel, and George Best (!) all referred to as the 5th Beatle. Of these I think only George Martin had a significant input into their music.

I thought yoko ono ( or whaterver her name is ) thought she was the 5th beatle.

In fairness aspinall was with the Beatles from very early on.

Think you are over-reacting about this - The Beatles seemed to call a good few people 'The Fifth Beatle', mostly those who were in their trusted circle. This guy seemed to have done a lot to help them out including the court battles with Apple and the royalty rates with EMI and he only retired last year.

yeah i always thought it was a term of affection, and could be applied to a number of people involved in the band and their music.

Read that story yesterday. McCartney's not having a good year is he? His wife's ripped him off and now one of his oldest mates dies.

As I've already said, Stu Sutcliffe was literally the fifth Beatle.

George Best? :o Probably an amalgam of George Harrison/Martin and Pete Best. :D

According to a retired former Army member, that too is bollocks; the Army can't "stop" recruiting in schools because they've never done it in the first place.

Yesterday's Sun utilised one of the most contemptible gimmicks ever; the "giving away" of a "free" organ donor card, despite the fact that they're free anyway.

Lets see...Billy Preston's dead, Eric Griffiths from the Quarrymen is dead, Stuart Sutcliffe's dead, Murray the K's dead, Mal Evans is dead, Derek Taylor's dead Aspinall's now dead...so that leaves Andy White, Jimmy Nicol, Pete Best and my vote for Fifth Beatle, George Martin alive. Kinda funny that everyone who's ever drummed for the Beatles is still alive.
