    Well, part of the reason is that they grow real quick so you don't have to wait 6 months for results and you resow every couple of weeks to get continuos cropping.

    Cress on kitchen roll on the window - 14 days. Mustard same (3 days after the cress) 11 days.

    Stick garlic cloves in now possibly, October/November definitely.

    Sometimes you are better off growing some of the things that are expensive to buy if you use a lot of them. Herbs are obvious. A bunch of dill costs more than a packet of seeds sorta thing.
