Starglider was £14.99 back in 1986, and I knew someone... that nicked it!

Games are more expensive now, but far cheaper than in 1991. Sega brought out Sonic The Hedgehog in May 1991 with beautiful black borders and evocative 17.5% slowdown for £34.99 - £60 in today's money. And John Madden was selling for 40 smackers back then too.

Yup, console games have pretty much stayed the same price over the last 15 years or so. Heck, I remember looking in the Argos catalogue in the early 80's and dreaming of owning a VCS and some games - they were all priced at ?29.99 - that must be close to a hundred quid in todays money.

If you look around the net you can always find games with at the very least ?5 off. Play.com is always a good place to start.

I think the most expensive game I owned was Driller which retailed for ?14.99 back in 1987. It came in a lovely big box with all sorts of goodies inside, though, and was both groundbreaking and awesome (if a little slow).

The most expensive game I owned was Yes Prime Minister, clocking in at ?15.

Thank god for mail order as I ended up paying four quid for it.

I seem to remember a compilation by US Gold called 'History In The Making: The First Three Years' being fairly expensive, though I can't remember exactly how much. Comes on 4 cassettes in a huge double layered box.

I bought mine off a mate in school for ?3 when he was selling off all his Spectrum stuff to raise cash for an Amiga, and he only sold it to me so cheaply because he'd gotten it cheap himself from one of those monthly mail order home computer club things. I was in the same club myself at one point and got Ultimate: The Collected Works for the princley sum of ?1.50 as an introduction offer. :)

    A saving of ?11.49
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

At the time, maybe, but it fetches a lot more on Ebay now. I've seen it go for ?40 and more.

But there's probably more than 4 times as much effort put in, wouldn't you say? In terms of graphics and size.

Im always happy to shoot 3000-polygon enemy when he has 5 pixels height :)

But you are right, A-title game development is very expensive today. It costs like cheaper movie or so.

"Hostages" set me back a fair few quid... think it might actually be the last full-price game I bought.

£15 according to its WOS entry.

I actually had that "game", it came free with the Spectrum + I got; presumably whoever we bought it from wanted shot of it. It came in a really big, obviously expensive box with a glossy manual filled with badly-drawn cartoons explaining the backgrounds to the various characters. The scans of these on WOS are worth a look; they really are quite bizarre and, due to the way they're drawn, it appears some of the characters are running around nude at times (which at the time I assumes was what was happening, it being some crazy sci-fi thing).

Psyclapse and Bandersnatch? These 2 games caused Imagine to go bust, so that seems expensive to me. Oh wait, it was piracy that caused Imagine to go pop...

I can beat that. In 1994/95 I went and bought the new Elite game, First Encounters.

Whilst driving home a wasp entered my car and in a flap I tried to get the bugger out. I didn't and drove straight into the car in front of me.

I was young at the time and very naive, the driver I rammed into knew this and got me to give him some cash to fix his car without getting the insurance involved. The bastard convinced me that my insurers would fleece me. I gave him some cash to not get the insurance involved (?200) and went merrily on my way. Only later did it occur to me that he had saw me flapping around and applied the anchors so I'd smash into him.

    Live and learn.

First Encounters cost me ?240 in the end. Easily the most expensive game I've ever bought!!!

Just knew it would be beat lol. There's a lesson for every driver there. If one of them bloody yellow and black buzzing things is in your car, let the beads of sweat drip, screw ya nuts together and hope it effin flies back out of window!

Appears to be some sort of joke, as reading the entry here in WoS, it states that the price was 12.95 bp (the adverts indicated this more sane price, as it reads in the SPOT comment of the entry).
Anyways, nobody bought it! (or at least not that we know) as the game is still MIA :)

Oh balls! Thanks a lot! I'd managed to erase that First Encounters tragedy from the memory banks ;-)

    Same here!

Although it came in a nice red box there were no extras - quite expensive for a standard no-frills game

    Was great though!
