King of Kong (video game film/documentary)

edited June 2008 in Chit chat
Has anyone seen The King of Kong? It's a film/documentary about the battle to be the best player at the arcade game Donkey Kong.

It's interesting, except that it does no favours for the childish image of computer gaming, since one of the blokes is a total saddo, with an ego bigger than Charlotte Church's. He holds, or held, the high scores for a couple of arcade games, and thinks he's some sort of god. Although to be fair, the way his pathetic "fans" worship him, it's perhaps not so surprising that he's so obnoxiously conceited. He says things like:

"No matter what what I say, it draws controversy. It's sort of like the abortion issue"

"Well, maybe they'd like it if I lose. I gotta try losing sometime"

There was loads more, but I can't remember.

And the way those saddos there worship him is beyond embarressing. Someone said, for example, "Bill Mitchell is the closest gamer to being a Jedi".

And Twin Galaxies, the self proclaimed judge of all things videogames, who are supposedly unbiased, allow him to judge the authenticity of the scores of people who compete against him.... Maybe he is unbiased, but given his ego I think it's fairly safe to say that he has bias coming out of his ears.

And Twin Galaxies supposedly only allows scores that are proven, yet they accept Bill Mitchell's scores on a (dodgy) video tape, which could be messed about with. This is the same Twin Galaxies that includes Billy Mitchell as a judge, of course.

And the way both Twin Galaxies and Billy Mitchell treated the challenger, Steve Wiebe, was appalling. True, perhaps the film was deliberately edited to make TG and BM look bad (if so they succeeded magnificently), but if that's the case then why haven't TG and BM sued?

... "I wanted the attention, I wanted the fame, I wanted the glory, I wanted all the pretty girls to come to me and say, "Hey, I notice that you're really great at Centipede"!!"

    Quality!!

I see theyre giving it a proper release over here soon. I downloaded this from the net and yeah i'm embarassed by the usual computer stereotypes.

The one really fat guy whos 100% a virgin, the one who has a huge pile of video tapes to go through to check for records, i thought he was quite shocking.

I wont ruin the ending for people but its a decent watch, not something i would want to keep watching.

Thought its quite bad of the father to constantly play Donkey Kong when his kids were basically wanting attention and being ignored.

Saw Billy Mitchell at the Retro show a few years back, seemed an alright bloke, just a bit weird hair ! But thought he came across bad in that film though.

    Good to watch once though

Yeah. As I've mentioned on another thread, Xbox Live is full of them at the moment, sad gits who think that they've got some kind of high social status and command respect because they've got a few more Xbox Acheivements than you and a higher gamerscore, and they take great delight in constantly telling you so. All it proves is that they waste their money on shite games and don't get out enough

Yeah I also met Billy Mitchell at the last CGE and asked him if he thought people were stupid to even attempt playing these games when they don't stand a mog in hades chance of doing any better. Did he feel as though he wanted to step in and show 'em how its done? After a llllonnnng pause, he just shrugged and said he's happy to just let people get on with playing them. He knows what he's achieved and he's happy with that. I posed the same question to one of our UK contenders and got pretty much the same response. I was expecting a more controversial answer, ah well. Guess he ain't the big-head that some suggest.

Did anyone try his spicy sauces?

Have you seen the dvd or film ? Perhaps he came across okay with you that one time but i thought in the dvd seeing him hardly acknowledge the other guy etc, seem to not believe the other score and then sending in that dodgy tape of him setting the record was a bit bad. Thought Billy Mitchell came across very badly in the dvd.

No I haven't seen it. I did see 30 minutes of the MEGA-VHS of Donkey Kong being played to death a gazzillion time over. He stood next to me nodding at all the clever timing and jumps, saying how each level was completed. I legged it when someone came along and drew his attention away! Hehe! Sorry, Billy! :D :D
