What happened to Olli & Lissa 2?

edited June 2008 in Games
Anyone know the story behind this sequel? Obviously the game was released - you can download it from WOS - but back in the day I couldn't find it in any shop. Back then the only reason I even knew there was a second game was because Olli & Lissa 3 came out! Checking WOS it seems that none of the Speccy mags ever mentioned it (no news, preview or review) - that's probably why I missed it.

It seems strange because the first game was a massive hit - I remember it topping the budget charts for a few months. So why did the sequel slip out unnoticed? Also, the first and third games were released on Spec, C64 and CPC, yet the second one was Spec only.

Hmmmm. Did anyone actually see/buy this game back in the day?

It's funny that, because I remember in the later days of YS there was a feature which gave the O&L series a mention, and specifically noted that O&L 2 had never been released on the Speccy. A letter promptly appeared in the next issue from an aggrieved reader, stating that it did exist and that he owned a copy.

I agree though, it's kind of weird to quietly slip out a sequel to a chart-topping game - so quietly in fact that none of the magazines of the day review it. Not to mention the fact that "Olli and Lissa" is written in such tiny writing on the inlay you'd be forgiven for thinking the game was just called Halloween.

I didn't realise that people found it hard to locate. I saw the review in one of the magazines and promptly bought it. The cover and titling is odd though. It's also funny to have part 3 on the 'Cartoon Time' label. Seeing Olli and Lissa presented as dogs had me stumped!

I don't remember seeing the second game on shop shelves either...

Was it due for release around the time that BT sold off the Silverbird label? That might explain why No3 was released by CodeMasters.

Sorry to revive this ancient thread, but just noticed it. Yeah, I've got an original copy of Halloween too, I picked it up from an indoor market stall in Liverpool selling Speccy games (originals, not bootlegs!) and I had no idea that it was actually Olli & Lissa 2 until I got home and read the small print. I certainly don't remember it being reviewed either and I used to get all 3 of the main Speccy mags (YS, Crash, SU). It must have gone on sale in VERY limited quantities I reckon.

I guess the South got most of 'em. They were everywhere here. Funny how games / films are dristributed in different regions.

I only ever remember seeing the first one in the shops up here.

Although a mate did get the 3rd one from John Menzies at some point.

Never ever saw part 2 at all. In fact, I still haven't seen it so I think I'll pop over to the archive.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

The first 1 was always sold out at my local electrical store, could never get a copy of it. Then years later I spotted the 3rd one and wondered what happened to #2.

I put it down to the fact that since I'd never got the 1st one I hadn't been looking for the 2nd one (probably not the case).

Anyway I'd played the 1st game by the time the 3rd one was out and didn't really like it much.

With the wonders of emus I tried em' again, and still don't like em', nothing but nice graphics really.

It was indeed very small characters on the cover, just over "HALL" and it seems not to be on the side at all.

Here is the game in the WOS archive:

Yes, I remember seeing 'Olli & Lissa 2' on the loading screen first (before I noticed it on the cover) and, as a fan of the original, being pleasantly surprised....until I played it :(

And don't get me started on Olli & Lissa 3, all that rubbish with having to examine EVERY part of the scenery with the magnifying glass trying to find car parts? WHAT WHERE THEY THINKING!?!

I haven't got a clue about O&L2 but if i'd played the first one at the time I wouldn't have cared to even look for a sequel anyway. Bloody awful tripe and don't get me started on the collision detection.

The collision detection's fine. It's a bit of a frustrating game in parts but I managed to finish it after a few goes practice. And that was without pokes, cheats or snapshot saves. It was one of my favourite budget games ever.

Pleease! The rest of the world is stuck on the frog level of O&L1. How, oh how, do you get through it?!

Love all the games in the series, but the first one is still the best f'me.

It bloody isn't! Lost count of the number of times my arse end had clearly missed an enemy but the character block detection killed me.

O&L1? Funny, RZX archive has it avaliable for download ;)

The 'frog' level is the hardest one to work out at first but the rest is easy after that. I apologise for obviously being better at Olli & Lissa than you ;)

It bloody is! Once you account for the character block, that is.

Honestly, you guys are wusses... :p ;)

I rather have a, 'tip' than just see it being completed. Dunno why. I'm just funny like that. Praps if I get too frustrated with it, I'll have a look. :)

It does, however, have the note "Recorded using Rollback" next to it, so we do not know how much that proves. ;-)

Hmm...weird! I just mentioned Olli & Lissa 3 in a thread about games to try, before noticing this thread!

I'll need to try O&L 2, as I also believed it didn't exist....Haven't really played the first one much either, but I really liked 3....

A little bit of history relating to Silverbird and its demise and short-lived resurrection can be found here:

For what it's worth, I don't remember seeing 'Halloween' in development at Telecomsoft, but having said that, I never really got that much involved with the budget games...

Well, to try and make up for the fact that I didn't get too involved with the budget side of things at Telecomsoft, I have asked the ex-Silverbird main man (Colin) if the game was in development for BT before we were sold, and the answer was 'yes, it was in development at BT'.

So, I could have seen it in development at the time, but I didn't. Just thought you should know! ;-)
