Radiohead on the Spectrum...

Or something like that, anyway... with thanks to Make: and the person who pointed me to that.

I thought it was more another Hitchiker's reference to go with Paranoid Android. Radiohead are known to have been Speccy fans, though.

Of course Gasman recently did an AY tune cover of the Radiohead song 'Paranoid Android'. I wish it was available in a form that could be actually played on real Spectrum hardware, though. (Hint. gasman. Please? :-) )

Yep, and this means that as of now I'm only responsible for the second and third most insane Radiohead cover performed by a ZX Spectrum (third place being my Currah Microspeech version of Fitter Happier). Bah. This means war...

You asked for a Spectrum playable version before, didn't you? Oops, sorry. Will dig that out tonight.

Out of curiosity, is there a better citation to back up that statement than the "doesn't-quite-ring-true-but-I-can't-put-my-finger-on-why" factoid about Let Down that gets parroted everywhere? :)
It closes with computerized sounds created by ZX Spectrum computers, which all the members of Radiohead owned in the 1970s.

Now Radiohead are a great band and all that, but I didn't know they had the greatness to take a Spectrum back in time to the 1970s! :-)

    Here it is...
Paranoid Android - Spectrum version as a .tap file.

    Excellent, thank you :-)

    How do I say this?

That is absolutely wonderful. To be honest (and I am a Radiohead avid) that track is not one of my favourites. However your version of it gives it a whole new lease of life! Nice effort! Really happy that you did it.

Any thoughts on making any more RH tracks?

    EDIT:

What I really meant to say was - that is excellent. Really. Love it.

The best thing I can instantly find is this recent quote. I've certainly seen something from Jonny in the past saying other stuff about the Spectrum, but I can't find it at the moment.

Colin posted a link to the Nude cover on their blog:

Check out this brilliant remix of Nude - Jonny and I had a spectrum flashback moment

I haven't checked the first link yet, but here's a partial translation of a post on Speccy.org:
...I'm certain the image we see is from an emulator, (...) on a TV. (...) The sound isn't from the ULA, but AY, and the image shows a 48K. (...) I was able to extract the audio from the video (...) Here's the corresponding TAP file:

    http://www.atc.us.es/~rodriguj/radiohead.tap

    He aquí el TAP correspondiente.

Lo más curioso es que el programa BASIC de carga se llama precisamente "carga", en español. ¿Lo habrá encargado/copiado a un programador de habla hispana?

I did have my thoughts of shenanigans regarding the rubber 48K machine in the video because it did sound awfully AY-like, and I was going to try and extract the tape loading audio today and load it into a real machine (but I guess I don't need to do so now!). However, I did give them the benefit of the doubt because the Spectrum beeper can be encouraged to play some pretty neat multichannel stuff.

Still, it doesn't detract from the coolness of it, but really, they should have had a toastrack 128K machine there if they are using the AY. It'd have been no less cool to have a toastie rather than a rubber key in the video!

Yeah... any thoughts about doing more tracks Gasman? I'd love to release another covers musicdisk* ;)

    * For anyone who hasn't seen my speccy musicdisk (containing four of Gasman's excellent tracks) take a look here
