On paying my ?1, I pulled Portugal out of the hat in the sweepstake at work, so I'll be supporting them while they're in it. Not that they'll win it.
Well, who knows. They actually have a good chance I believe. A good team with many good players. A huge question will be if Ronaldo is tired both in body and mind after a very long season.
I'm going for Spain - think I've got to as an England supporter as they're the closest we've got for underachievment-to-quality ratio - they're even WORSE than us.
Did any else get annoyed by that bloody commentator on ITV last night - the main one not David Pleat or whoever the co-commentator was? I'll admit that Ronaldo is an excellent player and arguably the best in the world at the moment. Thing is, I don't think there's that much competition for that. Zidane's gone; Kaka's good but either brilliant or anonymous; Rooney changed his game to help the team and lost something on the way; Ronaldinho/Ronaldo are past it; Messi looks good but who wouldn't in that Barcelona team (excepting Henry). It was as if he was being paid to mention how good Ronaldo is every 30 seconds. Oh, and at the end when he basically says that Portugal are now going to win it - WTF - they beat Turkey, a tough but average side with virtually no goal-scoring potential - what a twat! They'll be semi-finalists at best.
I think in the end either Germany of Italy will win it, but I would love to see Spain or the Dutch do it.
I'd like to see an entertaining attacking team with like Spain, Holland or Portugal (Maybe France if they can perform as well as they have in the past decade).
It would be disappointing to have a thoroughly negative team win by defending the whole game and nicking a goal.
Pah! I watched both matches yesterday. Portgual looked good for the money and their second goal was excellent play with a brilliant turn to set up the final pass. The first one too, Turkey hung themselves, when Pepe got the ball the first time, all three defenders around him parted like the Red Sea and he went straight through the middle.
The atmosphere in the first match was pretty poor. We get more noise at Griffin Park with 4,500 people than their stadium with 42,500 capacity. Maybe ;)
However, what I will say about that first match is that for the most part until the Swiss tired late on, both teams passed it along the ground and used the midfield to get the ball forward, played at a fairly high pace and looked like they wanted to play some good clean attacking football. England would have struggled against either team.
The Germans looked good tonight, a bit fragile defensively but I'm sure they'll sort that out. Going forward they look potent, so they've got a be a good bet to reach the final.

It's the big match tonight, and "giant killers" Poland are going to do the business on Germany, big time.
Well, in my dreams anyway. :D
I've got to have some small hope. God knows I've supported England for years. :D
