ZX81 Question?

edited June 2008 in Hardware
Just bought a ZX81 on Ebay (as you do). It was sold as not working, but once I'd changed the fuse in the plug on the transformer it was working like a good un.

I opened the machine up (the first time it's been opened, judging by the four rubber feet on the bottom) to see what was in there.

I was very surprised it's a 1980 issue board, and the processor has a 'bodge board' on it, looks like it was soldered in at the factory.

Its a board with legs on the bottom which are soldered directly onto the legs of the Z80, and it has two 74LS chips on it. What does this little board do?

(The machine has been running for 5 hours now with not a hint of trouble! Delighted with it!)

I'm off to read my ZX81 Basic book now!
