I quite like Heroquest and Space Crusade.

Can anybody recommend any games like these two?

space hulk. i dont know if it came out on the speccy, you should be able to have a look in the archives yourself, or maybe it was released on another platform so you could try it on one of them.

but if you want something close to space crusade, i would suggest you donwload 'warhammer 40,000 - squad commander' for the DS (its a ds title) it is pretty much the same thing, only better.

Laser Squad and Lords of Chaos would seem the obvious ones.

Mastertronic went back to the source and released a proper Rogue.

That's a pretty fun game, and iIrc there are a couple of cheats(bugs really) one could do ... one of them you're bound to stumble onto yourself by accident
    Spoiler:

I love Laser Squad, maybe a bit short. Rebelstar games are similar to hq/sc too

Non speccy games? I always recommend the X-Com series that appeared on Amiga, PC and even the Playstation. Thought that just about nailed the turn-based resource combat genre to the wall, but without the middle earth vibe of Heroquest. All great games though. Found Space Crusade a little difficult at first but these games reward actually reading the instructions.

One day we'll be able to play Laser Squad via Wi-FI using ZXDS and between two Spectrums using Winston's Spectranet. :-D

I did like Space Crusade - thought it was an excellent piece of programming... but it was a terrible cheat!

The number of times I started to role a plethora of zero's at crucial moments was just ridiculous.

If my speccy had wandered into any casino in vegas and won as many times as that through 'sheer luck on the die role' it would have been escorted out the back by a group of heavies' and persuaded never to return.

Yep, that was the thing about the game. You'd get your tactics all sorted out brilliantly, and they'd all be negated by a succession of bad rolls of the dice. I guess it evened out in the long run, but it could be really frustrating if, say, you'd lined up a plasma gun shot down a long corridor with three or four aliens targetted only to roll a couple of zeroes.
