Does anyone here have footware that u don't drive in ??

edited July 2008 in Chit chat
I ask this because i have been having driving lessons since last November and have always had difficulty doing the manouvres, turn in road reverse round corner etc, because i always had difficulty using the clutch and accellerator to go slow ( which makes the manouvres easier to do ). For the past 10 years i have worn Adidas Samba trainers ( not the same ones :) )but today i wore some different traners and i could immediatly tell the difference i could control the clutch and accelerator really easily and i did all the manouvres really well, i am sure its not in my head and that these different trainers made a hell of a difference to my driving. Or is it like when u give a 5 year old some trainers and tell him they make him run faster he will run round the house telling everyone one he can run really fast now ???

Had a similar experience when doing my lessons. Clutch control was a nightmare, then after buying some new trainers, it suddenly seemed a lot easier.

On most modern bikes the clutch is operated with the left hand, the front brake and throttle with the right hand, the gear stick with the left foot, and the back brake with the right foot.

while I was learning/doing my test I wore flat canvas slip on shoes it made the manoeuvres much easier, now that I've had more practice I can drive in my normal black shoes. So as not to have to bother carrying the slip ons around and changing shoes.

there's a point where the inconvenience of not being able to finely control the clutch becomes less than the inconvenience of changing your shoes every time you need to drive :)

Shoes do make a difference when learning. I had some Doc Martens and they were a nightmare to drive in. Nowadays I can drive with any sort of shoe and its no bother. Practice makes perfect.

I think had i worn these other trainers from the start the driving lessons would have been much less stressful.

The bottom line is that if you need to "feel" the pedals wear shoes which don't have any sort of padded sole.

If I'm driving on the road I always wear thin sole flat shoes which are also allright for work, If I'm track driving then I use very thin sole boots with almost no heel.

If you ever have to heel and toe the controls you haven't got a chance in trainers but you will never pass your test if you try that either so it doesn't matter.

Driving barefoot is always a little tricky.

I tried that once and it felt completely unnatural. I also tried once to be like Michael Schumacher and use my left foot to apply the brake - I nearly broke my nose on the steering wheel!

I did my driving lessons in a pair of Reeboks, I hate reeboks but these were retro type ones with the pump and they were only $30 so I had to have em' for a laugh. First pair of Reeboks I've had since about 1986. Don't wear em' now.

Also did my driving lessons in a pair of white Vans, first pair of Vans I've bought in 10 years, wasn't really sure if I liked them at first, but now I wear them all the time.

But I have a knackered pair of Converse that are dropping to bits that I wear for work :D

Not sure if you are driving a 'real' car with manual gears over there but I've found All-Stars die in a couple of months if you drive in them :(

I learned in a pair of brown suede brogues (which where cool once, I'm just not sure when) and swapping after they died was a learning experience. Not so much of a problem once you've driven a few cars in a few different pairs but those early days are hard work.

Er, how'd you hit the clutch? What would stop you stamping on the accelerator and brake at the same time in an emergency?

I wasn't doing an emergency stop or coming to a halt, simply slowing the car down a bit. It was a straight bit of road and nothing was behind or in front and I thought I'd try it out with a feather touch of the brake - well the feather was more like a sledge hammer with the wrong foot!

Steel toe-capped boots are a nightmare to drive in. You can't feel the pedals at all.
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...
