Today, I accidentally stumbled across...

edited July 2008 in Chit chat
I was searching for information on a movie where one of the characters was brainwashed or something and had a code contained in his brain and it was triggered by the word "Applejack" or "AJ", so I was trying to find out what this movie's called and if anyone does know, please let me know.

Searching for +AJ +applejack +movie on Google threw up this instead.
While the internet is full of everything, I didn't know people were out there furiously debating such topics. It's a window onto another world.

So, in a rather weak attempt to start a thread that'll get bumped months after it's been forgotten... no matter how bizarre, what have you unintentionally stumbled across today, which you didn't mean to, but then caught yourself getting engrossed in?

Safe for work only, please :)

Welcome to our newest member, FluffyPinkVertigo

Well, I've stumbled upon a few weird things in the last few years, but most of them not english language websites so it would be pointless to post.

At least from the little I've seen, the people seem fairly civil over there on that pony board. Lately there's a lot of awful memes and ways to talk/treat other posters that infest some forums I frequent - people calling others "newfag"/"faggot" a lot, "stupid thread is stupid" and all that tripe, looks like those manners from the evil cesspool of anonymous (=licence to behave even more recklessly) lowlifes called fourchan are slowly spreading.
But then I notice on that kind of forum I'm just a lot older than all of the posters, they're growing up with the internet, picking up that stupid jargon and think they need to go with the flow regardless of how stupid it makes them sound.

Didn't mean to turn this into a rant, sorry about that.

Nah, you're doing it wrong, the way these people post is slightly different, ya ol' charva! And this is WOS so the assholishness of these memes automatically gets absorbed by the chuntey.

By the way, UNTGAL? I've never heard that one before and Google wasn't particularly helpful either. I'm pretty sure it means "U need to get a life" though.

Not really, "peg" is clearly an abbreviation for "Pegasus", the most famous flying horse in mythology... and the name of several Internet products, including a well-known email client (whose author insists on it being called "Pegasus Mail" to distinguish it from the others)...

What really intrigued me was that the depicted movie viewer had printed on it the name "Firenze", one of the centaurs in the Harry Potter universe. :D OK, I know that's Italian for "Florence" (the city, not the Magic Roundabout character -- it would be a bit embarrassing for Firenze, being a male centaur, to be called "Florence"), but it's an amusing (to me at least) coincidence all the same...
I never make misteaks mistrakes misyales errurs — oh, sod it.

Yup I've noticed things like that can become refreshingly addictive.

About 8-10 years ago me and my friends went through a phase of making fire balloons.

We saw one flying overhead one night about a year or 2 before we started making them, and it was around November 5th so we assumed it was a firework at first. Then when it didn't go out we followed it, we were leaving my friends sisters house on a last ditch attempt to catch an open fastfood place on the way home, but our detour following the balloon lead us in completely the opposite direction of home.

Anyway we found it and it was a few pieces of burnt balsa wood and a cut up carrier bag.

So the next day we tried a few variations using lollipop sticks, coathangers, etc, without any success.

Then a year or so later about the same time of year I says to my best friend remember that balloon thing? That's where the fun began, we managed to get a small one to hover, but it caught fire after a while.

After that we went bigger and bigger and had some real successes using fuse wire attached to a foil pie dish full of crushed chemical fire lighters.

We watched many of our ballons vanish into the distance then drop the burning stuff from a great height somewhere random (quite silly really).

Anyway what stopped us doing it was the ultimate fire balloon it was 3 black bags high, and we had to hang it over my friends sisters back stairs, and I went down in the yard to light it.

After about 5 minutes it was ready and full of enough hot air for the launch, so we gently moved it into the middle of the yard and let it go.

It floated slowly across the back lane going up as it did, then it hit some phone wires and went careering into the neighbours roof, setting it on fire (fortunately given the time of year the guy whose house it was thought it was kids with fireworks, and got his garden hose out to put the blaze out).

We stopped making them after that

We did have one last attempt about 4 years ago but we let it go at the park down the road, figured after the roof incident, it was best to let it go in a wide open space :D

Shut yer trap or I'm gonna put the hurt on you ... with my walking stick :-D
I'm 34, certainly somewhat older than most people on those forums I mentioned. Hell, most of them wouldn't even know the Speccy. I remember a topic in the Jets'n'Guns forums where they tried to get to grips with all the dozens of references the game makes. There is a weapon called Manic Miner as well some signs in the scenery with "Happy Horace" and "Ancient computers" (with the speccy's 4 colour stripe) and they didn't get those - kids those days, do they learn nothing anymore *shakes head*?

Well, about one more year for you, then you pass that magic age barrier of 30 and can join us in the walking frame brigade - karingal will be happy to take your application.

See, I don't like modern origami, because it involves creating curves and all the rest of it. I like straight line origami. Love the complex geometric shapes.
    Although there is this...
Next person to point out how it's not long until I'm 30 gets the legs of their walking frame sawn part-way through and their tartan shopping trolley confiscated :D And I'll erase Dial-a-ride from your speed dial too.
