Well since I bought Andrew's book I've already read them. So would have been nice to see a different perspective on those games. However if you haven't read Andrew's book I doubt that would be a problem.
    That's the one ;)

Often if i have received a new review from someone (Andrew said i could use his reviews i think a few weeks after we started book 1 so some i already had) i used that as i had received it first (Before Andrews kind offer).

On the other hand if anyone in the past has read reviews on Michaels Rubber Beermat site they would also recognise them ;)

Anyway cant you contribute to some reviews Vertigo ! ;)

Terribly sorry, I had offered to do some reviews, but I was a little bit busy with a 1 month time limit finding a new house and separating from my wife of 2 years against my will!
I think I won that argument... "You annihilated that one!" ;)

Not belittling the efforts, but perhaps there could be a little less of a rush to get the books out so that things can be got right, especially the need for someone to sub-ed and tidy up before final submission to you. If I see " its' " again, I'll freak :D And a more high-res cover image if possible. Don't send them jpgs, artefact horror!

Sorry to hear about the house/ex-wife !

No totally take your points on board. The first book i must admit i was excited as hell about and we released it early, yeah there are a few 'bugs' but nothing huge.

But yeah for book 2 we've taken much longer to edit/review it, i've uploaded it now and i'm waiting to get the first one to make sure its okay.

Book 2 has been done quickly as i wanted to take it to the retro show in a few weeks but Michaels taken his time to look at it so i 'may' get some copies for the show but might just miss by a few days but better to get it right.

For book 3 its going to be more relaxed, a few new people have contacted me wanting to do reviews so its good to get more people on board. Had a long nightmare trying to upload the covers, i do everything lulu says, minimum 300 dpi, the size is right but still it spits it out for no good reason. Must admit i like the covers !

Didnt realise 'its' was so painful ;)

Well here we are again I've just sent the review for Cage Match through PJ, that's 2 for book 3 at this rate I'll have sent you them all before 2 is even out.

How's that coming along by the way, I'm curious, you've been pretty quiet for the last couple of days?

I sent the document to Michael, hes been editing it all this week, gave me the final version last night. I've been faffing around with lulu this morning (one minute it loves the graphic file, next moment it hates it !), pain !

Anyway i've uploaded book 2, sent off for a few copies fast delivery so once i get those and it seems okay then i'll put the link out.

Just dont want to advertise it yet in case theres a major clanger

Good to hear, but time's a tickin' for the retro bash :D

You're gonna need those copies soon.

Lets just hope Michael didn't use word to spellcheck everything this time :p

Well i checked with them, it apparently takes 4 days to process the order (for black and white) and then as i chose quick delivery (8 quid) i should have it 2 days later so 6 days ?! I 'should' have them in time (need them for friday 18th) as i'm leaving early early saturday morning before the post.

Then i uploaded it and ordered 5 but realised the spine font was wrong as lulu automatically made the font larger (as its a larger book)

Took about an hour but managed to persuade lulu to cancel my order from 2 hours before. Changed the font size to be the same as book 1 for the spine (fingers crossed) and re-ordered the new amended books x 5 so i hope its okay. I'll keep one and sell the other 4 (as long as theyre okay) at the show

Didnt want to gamble and order 20 in case theres a major error ! An 'its' i can live with but anything major is bad !

    Looking forward to it...

I'll be ordering one of each (colour/black and white) as usual...

Colour one for pride of place on bookshelf. Black and white for bedside reading.

    Awesome!

Cheers fella. I've ordered just a B&W one for now, once i receive it and its okay then i'll get a colour one myself

So, I've finished reading book 1 and what a good read it was too.
To be honest, I didn't read any of Andrew Rollings reviews as I had just read them recently (no offence). I was just wondering, couldn't Andrew's reviews be used as a standby if no-one else should submit a review? (No offence ;-))

I read most of Book 1 last night.

I thought I would share some highlights

    1. Steve R's brilliant review of Antics and tale of discarded grandmother
    2. BobS review of Z Man as it was very nicely researched and made such a dull review in prospect very interesting to read.
    3. uglifruit's passionate review of Boulder Dash. Really infectious joy.

3 good reasons to get the book if you haven't already.

Yeah i get your point. Bit of a catch 22, Andrew was very kind to offer his reviews, but i have had a fair few people email me to say theyve already got his book so want original reviews in. Andrews book sold 1000 copies whereas ours has, well not sold that many shall i say !

Book 2 has many of Andrews reviews (There are 100 extra pages for a quid more so it wont be a waste for people who know Andrews reviews) but for books 3-6 if theres someone who really really wants to review a game (as it was their favourite) but Andrews already done it i'm quite happy for them to review it. Theres a lot of passion from people for their favourite game !

I was chuckling to myself when I read that :D

I'm about half way through book 1, I'm taking my time with it, just reading a few pages here and there when I go to bed. Trying to make it last til' book 2 is available, but so far so good, and even though I visit TRB sometimes I still read the reviews from it, and I don't own Andrews book so at least it gives me an insight as to what I'm missing.

I'm up to Terror-Daktyl 4D in the book, which at a quick flick as I know I read one of your reviews yesterday, I stumbled upon your "The Wizards Warriors" review, avoiding the temptation to skip to it, as I'll read it later on today. I used to really like that game when I was younger, I wonder if you've been kind....or pounded it into the dirt :D

Again i dont mean to just say it but i do enjoying reading a review when i havent really played the game before and i'm curious to give the game a try or think 'looks great i really need to play this game'.

I love it that all these years later i'm still discovering new games for the Speccy, granted some are very bad but still finding a lot of good games.

I was torn about the review of Antics as i really liked that game ! Used to play that a lot back then, wanted to do my own positive review but Steve.R's review was very good, but i honestly always liked that game !

I'll keep that in mind, cheers Paul. With that, I wanted to do Dan Dare (Dan Dare 2 is already away, which is one of my favourite games of all time) and Firefly (in fact, I was going to use my Firefly review that I did fairly recently for gaming forum RLLMUK as a basis).

And you'd better be bloody nice to Firefly, or I'll come up there and sort you out myself :D
And Joffa will set his attack dogsheep on you.

Hey, I'm not the editor ;) I'm all for sending it to dm_boozefreek to jazz it up a bit though. Now there's a book I'd like to read.

It'd get banned, or it would be the only book on the top shelf that didn't have naked women in it :D

Some of the reviews I sent PJ had to be self censored, you should have seen what I said about Kung Fu Master at first. He pretty much couldn't have printed it without giving the book a mature rating

....and I'm still pretty mean about that game :D

Large quantities of ale, and game reviewing don't mix too well sometimes. Of course at other times they do ;)

I should have had the uncensored review of Kung Fu Master. Nearly 25 years on i'm still gutted how bad that game was, LOVED the arcade version, couldnt wait to get this Speccy version but it was terrible, shocking

Shame I don't have it saved either :(

I looked for it the other day for some reason and I only have the one I sent you.

The uncensored one did have this cut and pasted into it though, but I wasn't sure if you could print it?

EDIT: Oops it's message #36 I'm on about, but this thread contains all the vitriol you ever need about "Dung Poo Master" :D

Yep, it sure was. The NES version was great though, very close to the original.

US Gold did do a fair few cracking games but also some dire ones - Breakthru and Kung Fu Master

Really love arcade games on the Speccy but Konami messed up Jailbreak, Jackal and i never liked Nemesis either. Shameful

Congrats on the Retro Gamer coverage guys - a full two-page spread in the news section!

Surely that'll shift a lot of units. (of the book, rather than the magazine).
  • edited July 2008
This is so unfair ! ;)

I'm away at the moment so 1) dont have retro gamer 2) people have already ordered book 2 and have received them (i havent got my copy yet !)

I wanted to make sure the book was alright and had no huge glaring mistake before publically giving out the URL but some people found it at lulu and ordered. I even ordered fast delivery (compared to some people who selected normal postage and they already have theirs !

Looking forward to getting home late tonight now !

Would you prefer people to order direct through lulu or buy them off you at Retro Fusion? Have you ordered many many copies - then presumably selling overstock on ebay afterwards?
  • edited July 2008
I got my r*g this morning too - it's a good piece, even if I do say so myself ;-)

Just waiting for the inevitable "Monkey Hanger" jokes now heheheheh

As for book #2 for sale at retro fusion; to be honest, i can't remember if any have been ordered. If not, this was because I spent more time going through and editing the book and what with a tight timescale (what lulu needed v delivery times ready for next week), I was happier to miss the book being at that show but having a "better" book available.

If any of that makes sense!

Well at retro fusion i've got about 12 or so Book 1's, however for book 2 i'll only have 5. Thats because i normally order 1 (to check its okay) and then order 20 or so.

There wasnt time to order 1 (make sure its okay) and then order 20 in case there was a glaring mistake with it ! So catch 22, didnt want to order tons just in case ! I did order 5 though (And hoped there wasnt anything major or i would have wasted the money) but from what i've heard from people its great so cant wait to get mine.

Book 1's i would be happy if people buy from me at RF but i wont have many book 2's but will have some to show people (I'll sell 4 of them and keep the 5th to show others).

I'll restock on ebay soon, we make the same profit (small !) on ebay/lulu/retro fusion so either way will equally help us

    Cheers
