Nuclear bases are astonishly close to public land, meaning that some submarines are visible in dry dock.

I have visited the submarine museum in Gosport (near Portsmouth). You get to walk around a decomissioned submarine.

Nah, you're OK if you stay on public land.

It's the lesbian clown anti-nuclear protestors you have to watch out for.

    Seriously.

It's very easy to escape from that place ... at least according to Harold and Kumar 2 ... and if you don't escape then you'll enjoy your stay there (as per H&K2 :-P )

yeah i see what you mean, but i don't want to make a wasted trip, and i doubt they'd tell me if a sub was in port if i just rang them up.

ACHTUNG ACHTUNG! DIVE DIVE DIVE! BWOOOOP BWOOOOP!

Erm... I'm sure there must be a submarine fanatics forum somewhere on the lolatron that contains the sort of dork that can give you reliable information.

I think there's a German U-boat knocking around somewhere which you can go and take a look inside. A google search will probably yield its location.

I went on a German U-boat in Chicago - one they captured at the end of the war. It's in pretty much perfect condition, and they even ran the engine in the 90s to see if they could get it to run again... and it ran fine. I couldn't help but hum the "Das Boot" music while aboard :-)

Edit: Also http://www.uboat.net/ will give you the location of U-boats that you can visit.

"i'm on a submarine mission for you baaaaby, can't get enough of your watery love" :D

I think the musuem is in the south, or south west, and goes by the name of HMS Dolphin?

They have a Holland "class 1" there. Not the worlds first sub, but one of the first where the crew didn't like "die" as soon as they got in it.

As a kid, the most useless book in the world that I ever saw, was...........

    THE I-SPY BOOK Of SUBMARINES!

Most likely Faslane Naval Base near Glasgow where a lot a Submarines are based.

This is still operational so suggest Miles does not go there unless he wants a body full of lead...then again...

He's safe so long as he sticks to public land. Been there, done that, saw lots of silly protesters.

aren't the police allowed to detain suspected terrorists if they are on public ground? sounds odd.

Me and the wife went in a grounded one when we went to see the Queen Mary cruise ship in Los Angeles. *Really* small and claustrophobic, but very interesting. The claustrophobia didn't bother me all that much (although I wouldn't like to spend any prolonged time in one), but after 5 minutes the wife was panicking to get out.

Yep. I've been on that tour, and it's pretty good, just what you're after, Mile. Lots of other cool stuff to see there too.

As a Gosport resident, I can confirm that the Gosport Submarine Museum does have the Holland 1, which was the first Royal Navy submarine and does offer tours around a decomissioned submarine, just don't go in it if you don't like enclosed spaces.

I've been to that Gosport Museum. It was quite good. I also used to work for the MOD and almost got to go in one of the nuclear subs but it fell through at the last minute. I did get a tour of USS Enterprise when it was docked at Portsmouth though. Big... very big!
