I've had this debate with my brother a few times... Personally, I consider it a text adventure (he doesn't), mainly because the game revolves around the text on-screen, and you interact with the game with text commands (sort of). Also, the Mugsy games... I consider them text adventures for the same reason.
Great game but never managed to complete it. Every time i challanged someone to a gunfight i was either too slow or ended up shooting the town Judge or something. Other times i died in the desert or was caught by the agent tracking me. Still it was enjoyable game.

Yeah, unfortunately the agent's whereabouts become fairly random. You can usually avoid the gunfights though, if you have a knife and ammo in your gun, you can simply march them to the sheriff's office (if you don't have a knife/ammo they'll smash a bottle over your head and run away). Also, when you're travelling, if you have a horse you don't have to fight, just run (as long as you have plenty of food and water for your horse).
If I remember correctly you couldn't complete the game without gunfighting. Sure you could arrest the bad guys, take them in at knifepoint and get the reward, but they would always escape and come back again. So you would never find the guy you were looking for as these rogues just kept coming back and forth. If you killed them they of course would not turn up and eventually the one you were looking for would surface. i completed it tons of times, never got bored. This was one of my all time favourite budget games along with chaos, rebelstar, colony and journey's end.
