Two player games

edited September 2008 in Games
On this weekend we have a speccy party with my brother and cousin and would like to ask you to write me some tips of your favourite 2 player games. But I mean games where two people are playing at the same time.

Thanks

    Hyper Sports
    Daley Thompsons Decathlon
    Batty
    Gauntlet 2

    spring to mind.

Formula 1 (the management game) is a great multi player (I think more than 2 players are allowed) but you don't actually play simultaniously, you take it in turns for the management bit.

However, during the race a pitstop could happen for any players team so you all have to watch the race intently and then grab for the keyboard if it is your team that is making a stop.

I used to play BMX Simulator with friends, but that was an exercise in teeth-grinding frustration. I'm *glad* it's denienced :D

    Blasteroids was fun.

Bonanza Bros. is a great two player game, not quite sure what the Speccy version is like though, I think I've only ever played it on the Megadrive.

Bubble Bobble. Now there's an evenings worth of game play in that alone.

    Gauntlet.

Which has the added "fun" that, so long as one player is alive, the other player can start at any time. Leading to potentially infinite credits unless you both run into trouble simultaneously. Be careful, as this could eat up your evening/night and lead to hallucinating little one-colour heroes and monsters crawling round your bedroom walls and pirouetting into the exits.

    Or was that just me?

Probably not... I think me and a mate got to level 99 or 100 on the NES version, and it was really really hard. But, if I remember correctly, you then had another 99-100 levels to go after that. Also, I'm sure I remember him saying something like you had to finish the last level with both players still alive to get the "proper" ending.

Midnight Resistance and Cabal are take-turns two player games on the Speccy, if memory serves.Speccy Cabal is sadly also missing the zany little dance the hero does on clearing the level. Nothing like dancing a cheerful little jig after mowing down hundreds of foes.

IIRC, on the arcade at least:

If you finish it on one-player mode, you get warped back a random number of levels to continue playing, with an Engrish message suggesting cooperation is the key to a 'happy ending'.

Finish with two players and you get to rescue Bub and Bob's girlfriends, which is the 'happy ending'. But again a message implies there's another ending, and gives a code as a clue... I believe you had to enter this on the title screen with the joystick and buttons... this makes the game much harder by switching enemies etc. around... but beat the final boss in this mode and you also free Bub and Bob's parents! This is the 'true ending'.

The single-player looping might be a bit frustrating to a home player, but I think of it as a nod to old-school arcade players who are given the opportunity to go just for the high score.

Bounces is a nice idea for a game, but it's dashed hard. Two player though.

Likewise. Instead, live vicariously through random internet folk!

You can also search around from that video to the pathos-laden 1-player ending etc.

My step brothers (both about 10 years younger than me) used to be able to complete the NES one and I watched them do it once. The could do it from the standard game and the SUper Bubble Bobble mode that opens up after completeing the standard game. They were only about 12 or 13 at the time.

    Motos
    Viking raiders
    Matchday
    Matchpoint
    Jonah Barringtons Squash

Chaos, although it's even better if you've got more than two players.

Viking Raiders is also pretty good with up to four.

Me and my mate got within 5 levels or so of doing it on the Spectrum (last few screens are ridiculous, the sprites are moving that fast the Speccy can't keep up and the baddies end up being just a flash.) But don't forget that the Spectrum version only had 80 levels and not the 100 of the arcade. I believe you need two players to complete BB on any platform, the latter screens would be just too hard. If one of us lost a life before level 30 we would start again!!

I beat the original Game Boy version, extra levels and all. It had infinite continues and passwords to make it really easy though. And it was crap compared to the arcade/Speccy versions.

Xeno and Ping Pong are my favourite 2 player games.

Meeeee!!!!! On the real speccy, no cheats, just a friend's help. All that effort for a tiny 'well done' label, but it was funny anyway.

By the way, I made a piece of spectrum hardware to accomplish that goal. We had been near to finish it one or two time before but then accidentally had pressed break and the game restarted. One weekend we disabled the key with a specially shaped wire and went for it.

And my multiplayer favourites: bubble bobble, rodland, space crusade, rodland, rampage, emlyn
