edited September 2008 in Games
Found these 5.25" disks in my loft at the weekend and thought you guys would be interested. I'm in the process of extracting the stuff that is on there. Will keep you posted.

That 8-inch floppy disk image looks rather familiar, like the one here :D :-

I give that one a rating of "nice try - but must try harder".

Since the TRS-80 model II had an 8" disk drive and the original poster mentioned it was a 5.25" disk, right away it didn't seem to add up.

OK, so some people fitted 5.25"/3.5" to their model-II systems in later years, but all of the officially branded "Radio Shack" model II media would have been 8 inch, not 5.25 inch.

In any case the model-II is a very obscure member of the TRS-80 family compared to the model-I and model-III from what I can gather.

Although I haven't myself used a 5.25" disk for about twelve years, the dead giveaway is the position of the smaller hole - it's in the wrong position for a 5.25" disk.

Looks like a 5.25" to me.

Any ideas what the writing on the disk says after "Bandersnatch development disk"?

"Load Dis First!!!", at a guess.

All the interviews with John Gibson etc stated that they used Sage IV's as development systems so this must be a fake.

Looks like a 5.25" to me.

Indeed, they do look very similar but it is an 8" disk.

    Here's a comparison

    disks-1.jpg

Left to right - 8", 5.25", 3.5". Note the position of the small round hole next to the large centre hole - compare with disk in original post (also below).

Of course it's not really the disk size that's the central issue to this thread - rather just the fact that the image of the disk as originally posted is identical to the one on this page on the oldcomputers.net website (blemishes and all):-
    http://oldcomputers.net/floppydisks.html

    (But with the writing added.)

    EDIT: Here's the comparison:-

    8-inch disk from oldcomputers.net website:-

    "Bandersnatch" disk as originally posted:-

I leave the reader to draw their own conclusion.

oops, I almost forgot my manners - in any case - welcome to the forums Lindale!

I wouldn't want to give the impression that we aren't polite to newcomers to the forum. :)

Hope you enjoy it here, Cheers DP

    It's definitely not Stonkers!

    Gift of the Gods perhaps.

I must say that it was a quite clever and well-done fraud, and if the loading screen was not ripped directly from some other game a lot of work seems to have been done on the faked one.

No, that one looks very different:

Didn't Retro Gamer buy the Bandersnatch disks some time ago in an eBay auction (in the Live days)?

It's based on Mire Mare ... that's how good the fraud is.

I wonder if the "Cain" in the lower-right corner is supposed to be Steven Cain, these the loading screens made by him has a similar signature:

    B.C.Bill.gif Pedro.gif

He worked for Imagine in 1984 so that would "fit" too.

Based on the 2 loading screens you've fopund it doesn't look like his style.

    Wouldn't be Radio Shack.
It's a US brand. Would have been 'Tandy's' back then.

Nice try though... Probably would have worked better on the Retrogamer forums...
