As I understand it, it is most likely not 3D. I think.
Well, I'm sort of 60/40 in favour of it being 2D. I can't be sure. I just hope that if/when the game does surface that I will recognise it, and that I'm not grossly misremembering the entire thing. I can vaguely remember images of certain parts of the game, but the more I try to focus on them the more warped my memory of them becomes. Kinda like when you have a little shape floating around in your eye and it disappears when you try to look directly at it.
There's one part that sticks in my mind, although the exact details may be skewed by time. It's a corridor or room in which there's what appears to be moss or seaweed hanging from the top of the ceiling, and you can swim into it and be sort of hidden by it. Now, I'm not sure if this is indeed what I saw, or if it was simply the dodgy blending of foreground and background graphics that the Speccy is famous for haha. I also remember distinctly at least one treasure chest.
The moss/seaweed thing is what led me to doubt the 3D element, because that specific image in my head is presented as 2D.
I don't recall playing this game as much as others, but for some reason it has always been present in my memory banks, and I've always had an emotional response when I think of it.
Obvious i know but talking about the seaweed etc totally reminds me of Scuba Dive. He did say it wasnt this one but just seems way too similar
When I started looking for this game Scuba Dive is the first one that sounded like it might be up my street (until I saw the screenshots, of course) so I know what you mean!
That graphics description put me in mind of more games with Spectrum underwater scenes.
It might be the underwater bit in Slightly Magic.
At a push it might be an underwater screen in Kokotoni Wilf.
It is surely not a diving sequence from New Zealand Story though.
None seem very likely but they are all 3 enjoyable and may be better than the game you have forgotten.
It's none of those games, however I used to play Slightly Magic on the Amiga! That was actually another game I had long forgotten and spent weeks trying to find screenshots of hahaha. I didn't even know there was a ZX version. I just checked the screenshots in the archive and the graphics are so very, very different hehehe.
was it part of a compilation tape/ or a magazine cover tape?
can you remember the loading screen?
was it a budget price game?
I think it was a budget game, in that I don't think it was well-known, and I think I was the only member of my family to play it haha. Other than that, I'm drawing a blank here.
Now that you mention it...! But unfortunately it's not that one. The drawing was really just a way of showing the confusion between 2D and 3D, in that moving "up" into the next room can be done in both views, so I'm not sure which is correct at this point.
My screenshot sifting campaign will start later tonight, so I'll keep ya'll posted!

Do you remember if you could swim "freely" in the rooms, or if you had to follow of determined pattern in the middle and could only for example move up if there was a door/exit above you?
Would you say that the graphics were simple or more advanced/good looking? For example, some of the suggested games in the thread are very simple and BASIC-looking, was it like this or had a more "professional" look?
i think someone needs to shine a torch into his eyes and start slapping him around with a leather glove. he will remember in the end, they always remember. :p

When I first started this thread I was convinced that it was 3D, and that you could swim around freely. But I'm not sure about that now. My head hurts trying to picture it lol.
I think the first game that was suggested here, Hydrofool, was sort of similar, graphics-wise. The graphics are definitely better than the basic games mentioned here. I remember the game being almost bleak in nature; very dark tones and such.

Would you say that the graphics were colourful or mono (e.g. only green/black)?
When I saw the load screen screenshot I had a reaction in my bowels...I definitely know this game, but I'm not sure if it's the one I'm looking for. Perhaps it's this game plus another one like Hydrofool that have melded in my memory hahaha. It's possible! The colours are about right, too.
Just checked the screenshots for that game; yep, you guessed it, that's not it! :p
Ok, everyone take a coffee break! You've all worked hard enough haha. Maybe this is a lost cause...my memory has too many holes in it. I won't be offended if you guys wanna wrap this up, like I've said before, you've already gone far beyond the call of duty.
Comments
There was also some kind of official Jaws the movie-game, can be found here.
It did also involve under-water swimming, but since you did not know of any Jaws-game it is most likely not the one.
I can also assume it is not Navy Moves? Some levels involved underwater swimming if I don't remember incorrectly.
Interesting stuff about the JAWS game, but as you already suspected neither of those games scratch my itch!
Thanks lads :)
Scuba Dive?
Scuba Attack?
Dickie Diver?
We love it, it's a bug with us trying to be the first to get it right

The memory's a weird thing, that's for sure!
Many thanks, chaps.

Had a quick look at the screenshots for this game, but it ain't the one! ;)

'cos C.O.R.E could be winner too

i was thinking about that too, a man with a helmet on underwater, looks a lot like a man with a helmet on in space.
how about 'omega 1'

With a bit of imagination it could be Atic Atac

I think the graphics are closer than most of the other suggestions, but it's not this one.
