Playing with fire, too many good things have been ruined with spin-offs and sequel/prequels.
It's only a 50/50 split in cases like this really good, or really shite.
But either way you know the fans will buy it/watch it/ read it just like everything else that's been ruined over the years (Star Wars, Alien Trilogy, The Hills have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but at least it's not a remake they are usually the bastardization of something great, I've never actually seen the Hitchhikers movie though, I heard mixed opinions on it).
I always thought the strength of the HH books was the journey, the joy of reading them, rather than the plot. Whilst this means I think the last two books are the weakest of the series (there's a reason they were merged into a single radio series...), the first three were filled with Adams' style of humour. No one can reproduce that.
So, any new HH book will be just like any new Sherlock Holmes book: same characters in a similar situation, but without the same soul.
You are all hatstand. There's nothing particularly sacred about the books. At least one of them is based on an unfilmed Dr Who script.
But at least it was DNA who wrote the Doctor Who script.
At least two of them contain major reworks of the second radio series. As far as purists like myself are concerned, none of them are canon.
Again, at least this is all DNA's own work and as Nick says it's not about the plot but more about the unique something that DNA adds.
You probably all hated the film as well, even though the major plot changes were made by Adams.
I didn't hate it but I wasn't happy with it, whilst the script was ok (but nothing more than that) I thought the casting was particularly weak especially Zaphod and Ford. Martin Freeman wasn't as good as I expected or hoped and only Trillian for me came out unscathed.
I quite liked Alien 3, it was the least impressive of the 3 I'll admit, but it tied the story up Ripley died taking the last Alien with her.
Then came resurrection, and completely undid everything, growing aliens from samples of Ripleys blood indeed! What a pile of faeces :D
I'm surprised that big wonky faced dude who played Hellboy, and Sigourney Weaver ever got another acting gig after being in that. I haven't seen Winona Ryder or Dominque Pinon in anything since, and I suppose apart from those 2 the rest were nobodies really.
Although the guy with the alien inside him was the guy who got forced to shag the prosser with the bladed dildo in 7even?
I disliked the film because of the book segments. They weren't as well done as the TV series and often missed off the punchline (as though the directors didn't get the joke).

I sort of know what you mean, though Stephen Fry was the perfect choice as 'The Book' I felt the directors missed the point completely as they did with the entire film.
I don't see the problem. Its a tribute extension rather than an attempt to rewrite the Adams originals. As far as I can tell its not being passed off as by DA.There must be hundreds of amateurs who have written pieces using the Adam's original characters and writing one to sell at least benefits the widow. I don't see the same outrage over Sebastian Faulks extending the Bond book series.
Its actually a tribute to leave behind such a passion for your creative work that people desire more and it will inspire more people to seek out the original series furthering the reputation of DA.
I won't be reading the new book but I think that any new Arthur Dent book is mostly harmless.
Ian Fleming has been dead for 44 years whilst DNA has been dead for just 7...
A fair point. John Gardner started writing James Bond books 30 years ago, but that is still double the time lapse.
Actually I think Bond fans were a bit outraged back then, the moreso becuase Gardner's books were quite poor.
But I'd still say that the man's wife can probably judge how sensitive or not Adams would be better than anyone else.

I agree with this ... I doubt her wallet is in dire need of further padding, (i.e.) it is probably not a question of her needing/wanting to capitalise on DNA's past works/future additions to the series.
Let's be honest, a new book by a different author could hardly be worse than Mostly Harmless. In fact, if you ask me, the first two HHGTTG books (HHGTTG and The Restaurant at the End of the Universe) were very good, the third (Life the Universe and Everything) was patchy at best, and the fourth (So Long and Thanks For All The Fish)was much worse (at least as a HHGTTG book, as it lost much of the humour, but the writing was surprisingly good), and the fifth book (Mostly Harmless) was terrible.
His two Dirk Gently novels, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, and The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul, were very good.
I wish other, equally good Dirk Gently books would be released.
And regarding Alien 3, I thought it was an alright film, but as the first two were stellar, it looks very weak by comparison. Alien 4 was a lot better, and I don't understand why people say it's bad.
Now Superman 4, that was a terrible, terrible film.
Edit: Forgot to say, the film of HHGTTG was awful. Ford was almost mute, the two heads bit was terribly done, the alterations to the story were a real mistake and the whole thing felt rushed, both in the length of the film and the actual writing of the thing. The TV version of HHGTTG is very good indeed, and it's a real shame that a follow up was never made.
Dare i say it ? What happens if the latest HHGTTG book is decent ?
People slated Daniel Craig when he was named as the new Bond and he surprised many, i'm sure a fair few thought bringing back Dr Who would be a mistake (and with Billie Piper) and thats been a huge hit.
I'm surprised that big wonky faced dude who played Hellboy, and Sigourney Weaver ever got another acting gig after being in that. I haven't seen Winona Ryder or Dominque Pinon in anything since, and I suppose apart from those 2 the rest were nobodies really.
Brad Douriff (the mad scientist) went on to do Grima Wormtounge an Bride of Chucky afterwards, Michael Wincott (the pilot of the Betty) went back to theater work nd Dominique Pinon did an advert/intro thing for Sci-Fi channel (at least in the UK).
Although the guy with the alien inside him was the guy who got forced to shag the prosser with the bladed dildo in 7even?
Yup, he was the guy in Se7en with the dildo. I saw him in something the other day, probably an episode of Millennium which was probably before Alien Resurrection. Probably.
--edit--
Oh, and I most probably wont be reading the new HHGTTG book. The ending as it is now I thought was a good way to wrap it up.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

yeah he's in a bunch of stuff, usually getting killed or being injured in someway.
he was in pearl harbour and saving private ryan. on a hospital bed and just after crashing his glider respectivley

I suppose on the other hand, he might be better at keeping to deadlines than DNA...
*I'll be reading it nonetheless*

Surely Richard Adams would have been the more obvious choice
IMO Anything 'Hitchhikers' written by anyone other than Douglas Adams is fan fiction, nothing more and I'll never view it as anything other than that.
So, any new HH book will be just like any new Sherlock Holmes book: same characters in a similar situation, but without the same soul.
Trilogy? The third film was shite, shite, shite.
I enjoyed AvP though. Haven't seen AvP2 yet.
I like the idea of the third one, the Alien is different as it comes out of a dog.

I think I forgot what I was talking about?????
or out of a cow, depending on which version you watch. :-D

Was that the one with Nuclear Man? Wonder what gave them that idea?
Utter Cack
Haven't seen the new one, but I suspect it'll be terrible.
Superman Returns? Apart from the Superboy plotline, it really wasn't too bad.
People slated Daniel Craig when he was named as the new Bond and he surprised many, i'm sure a fair few thought bringing back Dr Who would be a mistake (and with Billie Piper) and thats been a huge hit.
Yes, the Solar Man or Nuclear Man one, it was awful. I haven't seen Superman Returns yet.
About half a dozen other people or so.
