You are all hatstand. There's nothing particularly sacred about the books. At least one of them is based on an unfilmed Dr Who script. At least two of them contain major reworks of the second radio series. As far as purists like myself are concerned, none of them are canon. You probably all hated the film as well, even though the major plot changes were made by Adams.
I liked the film a lot, although I seem to be in a minority of H2G2 fans in that respect. But I think this book is a bad idea, as has been said above it can never really be anything other than fanfic. Adams imagined and wrote the entire Hitchiker's series; it belongs to him and no one else can really add to it in an official capacity without it seeming very very wrong.
Dare i say it ? What happens if the latest HHGTTG book is decent ?
People slated Daniel Craig when he was named as the new Bond and he surprised many, i'm sure a fair few thought bringing back Dr Who would be a mistake (and with Billie Piper) and thats been a huge hit.
The animosity towards the choice of Craig for Bond was largely down to him (supposedly) not being the correct physical type (blonde, too rugged) even though he was closer to the Bond of the novels than the likes of Roger Moore; most of that criticism was movie fanboys who thought Bond should be a quipping playboy with a gun. As for bringing Doctor Who back, that was always a good idea and never an especially risky venture and it's a surprise it took so long; more than likely it was due to media chatterers who'd built-up the myth that it was regarded as a "cheap embarrassment" that "no one liked" despite considerable evidence to the contrary (and this nonsense was demolished with the viewing figures for series one which were in no small part due to the series' lingering popularity). As for Billie, the objections to her came from understandable prejudices due to her being, in the public eye, first and foremost a former pop star and so people made assumptions about her acting abilities. Those were put right when she turned out to be quite good in the role.
The objection here isn't to the bloke who's going to write it (who's probably a perfectly good writer), it's to the fact that this is a direct continuation of a series of books which has, up until now, been the brainchild of and infused with the personality of one man who's no longer with us. Either this new book will be written in a completely different style and thus feel disjointed from the rest of the series or it'll be an attempt to ape Adams' style and humour which would be rather uncomfortable reading.
I'd have said bring back McCoy, but they couldn't cos' they killed him off in that pathetic Christmas Special with Paul Megane in it (but there is the point that Sylvester McCoy is about 337 years old now too :D).

But in the example of Bond surely it should have been a case of 'well wait and see' before moaning ? Same for the Lord of the Rings films, i remember a few people at the time saying they shouldnt be doing a film version of those.
If i was a fan of Hitchhikers (granted i'm not) i think i would be pleased/interested to see some more books etc. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, if sadly George Lucas wasnt around i would be more than happy if someone else did a Star Wars film or two.

I'll willing to bet at the time they'd never even heard of Ralph Bakshis animated version.

I'd rather see Star Wars without Lucas :)
I'm more than happy to see HH in somebody elses hands given that the writing duties has been given to somebody who is both funny and has a personality. It could have been written by committee which DNA would have found hilarious :D
He has final say on anything in the universe not only did he rubber stamp Jodo he pushed Jar Jar into the mix as well. If two wrongs don't make a right a Jodo + a Jar Jar has to be a very wrong thing :)
